Additional Diplomatic Options

Thu Jul 15, 2010 4:04 pm

As we all know, at the moment the Diplomatic options are few - understandable, given the importance of working on the core game systems rather than chrome.

However, perhaps some ideas can be generated for additional options - and I have one suggestion:

In historical reality, the south German states' commitment to the war and their military resources was limited - after the initial contingents represented in the game, I can find no reference to additional regiments "sent to the front".

However, with both their historical patrons (Austria and France) involved, with the legal sanction of the Empire against Frederick, and given the "religious war" dimension of the 7YW which has lately attracted renewed scholarly attention, the rulers of Wuerttemberg and Bavaria did not lack for incentives to strain their resources to provide additional troops, particularly if subsidies had been forthcoming from the major combatants. So, there is sufficient historical justification for options providing additional contingents from these two states.

In game terms (specifically, the 56-63 campaign I'm playing with Bertram and a series of solitaire tests) it's not usual for both contingents to be used up by 1759 or so, if they've been in combat. My observation is that both Wur and Bav end up with large pools of replacements which can't be used because their regiments have been destroyed.

So I propose diplo options similar to the Swedish reinforcements or the periodic contingents of Ger/Swi/Walloon troops the French receive - a couple of bdes in return for (say) 10EP and $25.

In that case please supply us with some names for the new / extra regiments that could be thus created... it is quite possible in some games that they will come in addition to those already on map, so the names can't be duplicates...

What I do not understand is the following: if the regiments from the original contingents have been destroyed, they are returned to the force pool, and so you can easily rebuild them... can't you do that :bonk:

I'll dig up some names for new regiments.

The construction screen has yet to provide me with any Bav or Wur units to build, apart from depot bns and supply wagons - maybe some other auxiliary units (?) but no infantry. Perhaps an oversight?

No oversight, they should come only when an original one has been destroyed as the force pool limit is exactly the number of regiments received by events... try to have a few killed and see if they are back. If not, it means I need to fix something in the event file (which creates their FP)

Bavarian and Wurttembergers Rgts are those used during the war, those that didn't participate are not in the game. Perhaps in some case they could be locked and release in only a few cases like a Prussian Invasion...but the Prussians are already well engaged elsewhere.
For the diplomatic options, yes they are few but such was the case during the war, no betrayal, treachery etc...
A " Everybody for himself " as stated by Fred II happened during the War of Austrian Succession (1740-1748) especially Prussians and Saxons but every country thought about it and this is certainly why it didn't happen in the 7 YW.

In the epic battles around Leipzig in the game Bertram and I are playing, every last Bavarian and almost all the Wuerttemberger units were destroyed - that was a game-year ago - still haven't seen new units available for purchase. So you might want to take a look at the event file. ;)

Just some jottings and notes while I think about this:

Possible contra-factual interventions:

Denmark (additional troops under Prussian/Hanoverian command, possibly forcing withdrawal of Swedish troops?)
Spain (additional troops under French command?)
North German states (i.e. Hansa towns, Mecklenburg, etc side with Prussia and don't need to be conquered).

In such a case, we would need some OOB data for these nations

I have read Denmark stayed neutral in 7 years war, with the foreign minister Bernstorff. Even Frederick asked for ships they refused, It was too risky for them to have war against France,Austria,Sweden and Russia. Relations with the Russia were cold indeed but.. They decided it is better to continue neutral shipping.

Spain joined the war in 1762 I guess, They invade portugal. I looked at the database and the event is there. But İm not sure they send troops to Germany.

Ottomans were in good relations with Prussia. Sultan was trying to modernize the army as Frederick did. But I couldn't find information about sending troops to conflict. Relations with Russia was very cold, A few years later after 7 years war, There was a battle between Ottomans and Russia.

There is not much reason to have foreign intervention apart from some flavour multi-choice diplomatic events I guess :)
