Prussian AI

Tue Feb 08, 2011 7:41 am

The Prussian AI just thoroughly impressed me. I started out with a very successful drive into Saxony to rescue Rutkowski's force, Browne defeated Frederick twice (twice!) in and around Lobositz, the remaining Prussian corps withdrew to Dresden and the siege of Pirna was lifted. Then after a rather long winter quarters, the Prussians re-invaded Saxony with everything they had-Prussians-Hessens, Hanoverians, etc. etc. and now even the British. Needless to say, 1757 was a tough year- Charles and his army were trapped in Bautzen (eventually disintegrating due to lack of supplies), Daun was defeated at Lobositz and again in front of Prague; the Reichsarmee is besieged; the Russians cannot take Konigsburg (no surprise) and the Swedes, after a raid on Berlin are fast on the retreat. The only success I have had are with the French, but that is only because the Prussian armies have completely evacuated the Rhineland. The war is going badly fast, and if things keep going the way they have been I will lose outright in 1758. Great for the AI, and even greater that the AI is kicking A, but very bad for me. In the 5 grand campaign games I have played the AI has NEVER once played this well. And hear I thought after such a promising start I would go on the offensive and be in Berlin by the end of the year.

In one of my games AI Frederick gathered 110 000 men around Dresden then marched to Silesia. I was not able to defeat him(standart difficulty,+2 fog bonus) when I attacked with all my Austrian troops. In winter I positioned my corps around mountain passes in Silesia and blocked his movement paths with defensive posture. It took may turns for Frederick lose his cohesion and strength. (Attacked very turn to move from theatre) There were very few oppositon to French armies. I guess under hard difficulty Frederick will have more cohesion and cause more threat where he marches with also +4 FOW bonus. But Prussian AI is indeed very good even on normal settings.

About Austrian AI. In my games, French genarally goes for Mınden. If they see good defensive line then they move north to and conquer all the way to Stettin from north. If they able to do that, player will have many fronts to cover and things get difficult.

Russians currently can march and conquer Kolberg under standart difficulty. But after Kolberg they dont go for Stettin. They go for Poznan-Kolberg. This can repeat many years. When they go Poznan to have supply, they are in big trouble. But I think under hard difficulty(AI move faster, less cohesion loss) and +2 activation bonus Russians will be more inclined to attack Berlin or Stettin.

But general rule about defating AI(when outnumber) is to use harsh weather, snow. It is usefull (especially playing as Prussia) to block the paths when AI decides to take winter quarters.
