My first impression

Fri Apr 16, 2010 6:04 pm

Hello!

I would like to share my first impression of this game. In my opinion the first impression are crucial if a gamer would continue playing the game (at least if it´s a demo, if you bought the game you probably will have a bit mor patient). Today there is lots of game so if your first impression are bad there are other games to try.
Why do say this? Well you may say that I try to convince the game developers for the games I like to try harder with catching the first-time players (Actually I´m a first time player but I like strategy and I´ve got a good feeling about his one).
Anyway, back to topic.

The first thing that caught my eyes, or actually my ears, was the music. It´s good and gets you into the right mood. So that´s a plus.
The starting menu is also nice and clear. So that was also promising. There are a few options to chose from, but since I didn´t know anything about the game yet I trusted the standard choices to be the right ones. But there is good to know that I can change stuff if I want to.
The first thing I did was playing through the three tutorials.
Here I was a bit annoyed by the size of the tutorial texts, it was a bit hard to read because it was a bit small and there could be lots of stuff to do in the same text box, so I had to reread the guildings several times to be able to follow it correctly. So to improve this I would like to see some more space between the stuff I´m supposed to do, and maybe have a few more pages to make it more clear.
I would also like to have an extended tutorial, beacuse I still feel like there is lots of stuff I don´t know. But I´m sure that´s covered by the manual.

So far I´m liking what I see. But I have yet to test the actuall game. :D

Believe me, we reduced the average size of texts in the tutorials though, compared to the previous games, plus there is now 3 tutorials. Before there was 2 and even before, we only had one :)

So, there is improvement (and you now get orange arrows pointing on things too). But slowly, I admit, because of limited resources.

We hear you though... Thanks for your fresh look on the game.

Thanks for your reply. :)

I´ve now played a few hours and I wanna give some feedback on the gameplay.
The command structure seems very nice, even if it´s a bit confusing the first time, but after a few games it makes sense. The only thing I´m, a bit confused about is that there sometimes are hard to understand why you can´t attach certain general/units to the command structure. But that´s probably my unexperience with the game messing with me.

Otherwise I would like to see some more information about what happens in my country. I play the 1756-1764 scenario right now and even if my battles agains the austrians goes well things gets a bit messy when my ally forces are unlocked. The reason is that I don´t know what to to with them. Who am I at war with and so on (it would maybe be good if there was a posibility to put allies under AI-control). Maybe this isn´t a problem when getting used to the game, but for a newbie it´s not so easy.
So if I could improve the game I would try to add more information for the player.

So right now I have to find out how to use all my forces. But on the other hand I can sure use them when bringing the war to the enemies heartlands. :D

Hmm... now I´m confused.
How come I can move the honnover forces at the borders into enemy territories, but I can ´t move units inside Hannover itself, or move the units that doesn´t start at the borders?

The Hannover forces 'unlock' before the Hannover regions 'unblock'.. :bonk:

Wil add to the 'fixit list' :)
Always ask yourself: "Am I part of the Solution?" If you aren't, then you are part of the Problem!

I'm not AACW player, so I cannot compare. But I play RoP long time and frequently, because it is really complex game and strategists heaven :coeurs:
And from my experience, AI is very good and challenging and I must say, I'm many times surprised by good AI reaction
