Retirement of leaders

Anyone know whether retirement of leaders is random or a fixed pattern? Or is it influenced in some way by the gameplay?

Both. There are some fixed dates they come in and retire, as well as a probability this happens for whatever reason (disease, etc). Of course they can always die in battle as well.
