Japan Question

Thu Jul 05, 2012 9:41 pm

In my current game as Japan i started to build my first railroad in around July 1851. Now it is 1852 March and industrial revolution happened. I am building three railroads at the same time and i was able to trade with some western powers since the beginning of the game. I read some Japanese history on Wiki and i should not be able to do these stuff before Perry and Meiji.

1) Do you think some restrictions should be added to Japan? Or should it be left to player's choice: playing historical or not.
2) Do MP gamers do something about this, like adding house rules for Japan?
3) Do you think doing all these railroads, industrial sites and trading with European powers that early can cause a highly overpowered Japan?

1) Yes, there should. I have found that the penalties for a close economy and trading capability are not strong enough indeed. But you still have penalties in trading.
2) Perhaps. We don't have such house rules in our MP, but I definitely try to play my Japan in our 24-nations game with a handicap. I have set for example tariffs to 125%, you can't set it higher.
3) Yes and no. In a MP probably not, as other players will do the same (if house rules are not in place).

In my opinion the only certain thing that should be limited (hopefully the developers will do it) are the colonial options. They are too many (Japan gets them later). In our MP we had them limited.

Thank you for your very useful reply, Kensai :)

There is one thing i forgot to ask, does someone know what will Meiji Restoration bring? Since i already have industrial options, i don't have something in my mind that will change with Meiji. National attributes, perhaps?

Considering that the old emperor (Komei) and the Shoguns give ruler stats below 5 in most years, you will be delighted to hear that Meiji and his Prime Ministers will all boost your stats to 8+ levels. Meaning huge productivity and cohesion bonuses and tons of diplomats to scheme! ;)

Don't forget to share the wealth with your neighbours (soon to be 'voluntarily' included in Greater Japan) through the East Asian Greater Co-Prosperity Sphere!

The game is indeed a much more prosperous place when you have an open economy approach, not a mercantilistic. Meaning if you need 10 of some resource, better buy 20 and sell 10, than simply buy 10 and sell nothing. This because minor nations can only buy from major (and you are one of them!) through your trade ships in the various MBTs and neighboring countries, not by minor nations further away.

Does anyone else build trade ships early with Japan? What are the benefits if you do?
