Ship replacements bug

Thu Jun 16, 2011 1:39 pm

I noticed when I built a few coastal light ship replacements, that they were being dumped into my Ocean going light ship units. These elements should be restricted to costal ship units only I think.

A quick test revealed that that gave the unit the ability to move on either ocean or shallow/river regions with impunity. While this reduces the unit’s ability to fight at sea, it also increases its ability to dominate the rivers, as the current ocean going elements are far better than the river ones.

Here’s an image showing a unit at Norfolk plotted to move via ocean regions, then up the river to Southern Illinois:

You can see on the bottom right it now has two types of elements in the unit.

I think I understand what is going on. The class of warship is light warship, gunboat I believe, but, all your replacements for all light warships are light warships (Corvettes to Gunboats). So, what I think happened is that the game put a designated light warship replacement, and cannot really differentiate between design types, it just puts the most modern version of light warship as a replacement (which happens to be a corvette I believe).

Actually there are two light warship replacement elements you can build on the F3 screen. One is coastal one is oceangoing. But the game doesn't seem to recognize this limiting factor on the units in play so simply sees them as light elements and dumps them in whatever type of unit needs an element.

Coastal elements should be restricted to river units only and ocean elements should go to ocean units. Modernity of the elements had no bearing on what happened here, both types of elements got dumped into these units and my replacement pools emptied out even though I had no river units built yet.

I found something strange with the replace points too. When playing Japan, I sailed the Junk Squad some while in pacific and getting hits (two of the five units were at half strength). So I sailed back home, hoping for refreshing. Nothing happened. So under F3 I build two ship replacement points.
Next turn the two units were still damaged but surprisingly there was one unit more! Next turn the squad consisted of 7 units. So I build some more replacements, but the all went into new unit builds! At last I had 12 units in the squad and a building time of 91 days. After these days all units were at full strength. Very strange, I thought, replacement points were only used for replacements?

They replace whole elements if there are any missing too. So you'll need to top off all your units missing elements first before you can build a few extras that stay in the F3 screen so your repair function works. That's what I was in the process of doing for the US navy when I found the problem above.
