F7 Science and Technology

Thu Jun 16, 2011 10:59 am

When I press F7 I am surprise to see that nearly everything is already available and progres is 100% on most items. But I just started the game and I am still in 1850. So what is the point of research ? Who can explain ?

Then, when I reach 100% on an item, what can I do do develop a tech beased on this competed research ?

Most nations start out with lots of techs already researched, but it's different for each country. (Japan will have a lot fewer techs listed in 1850 than Britain does, for example.) Many of the techs you research will then unlock and reveal new techs. You can't do much to influence this except pay for a boost to research speed.

A couple of interface suggestions for the devs:

1. A tooltip explaining what factors are influencing the research speed - I understand thngs like building naval bases boosts the speed of researching naval tech, but unless I've missed something this isn't shown anyhere. How many buildings do we need to construct to have an influence?

2. Newly-researched techs are buried in the rest of the list so you have to search through to find them to discover what they do.* Any chance they could be highlighted somehow? For example, a newly-discovered tech is shown in a different colour, or has an icon next to it, or something on the turn it's researched.

*Actually this may be a bug - even if I sort the tech list by 'most recent first', a tech discovered that same turn might be halfway down the list. Maybe it's sorting by the tech's notional 'due date' rather than the date I actually got it?
