State-Player / Private Business

Thu Apr 16, 2009 1:20 pm

I think one of the most interesting features of this game could be the distinction between "state economy" and "private business". The first post of the original thread about VGN states that this distinction is modeled in the game. Could we have more hints about it? It seems that the management of economy is not based on the old formula "build structure - get resource". I would like to know what kind of decisions will be taken by the player, how they are influenced by private business (which I assume isn't under the total control of the player), and if the interaction "public - private" is made dependant upon the different political systems.

Very interesting question. I've always found it somewhat funny that most of these kind of games, usually portray what is essentially a planned economy, since the player usually has complete freedom regarding what, when and where to build. Victoria, with the expansion, modelled the distinction better than any other game I've seen, so I'm looking forward to seeing how VGN handles it.

The economic system uses 'Private Capital' to build up your industry and other infrastructures...this is different from 'State Money'.... this private capital is strongly dependent on your national structure: social classes, demographics, political regime, and even nation-based factors.... and of course the 'capital' generated by your private economy, industry and trade, as well as colonial profits (minus state taxes and tarrifs)... but such income will be of no use to build up your military ;)

There's a good reason why you're my favorite gaming company.

Sounds promising.

Paradox sadly went down the TW / war craft route of build a church here and a school here and a barracks here. Stupid stupid piss poor game play. Only victoria looked to break that mould with an excellent private development of industry model and they lost their nerve after the things that went wrong with that game and they returned to the easy "build a manufactory" route.

Yeah would have been nice to see the Victoria model built upon. But then, the economics were Victoria, just as character development was CK. That said, it would be good to see a kind of Victoria 2... oh wait ;)
