Colony vs. Vassal

Playing Ottomans while awaiting the upcoming patch and tried a little experiment in Yemen. Instead of going the traditional route of protectorate and then colony, I used my military to grab enough regions to allow me to slowly grow CP to 50 in the capital (had to delete and rebuild forts several times) so I could play the vassal card.

Net effect is I see no difference whatsoever between a vassal and a colony. I get no force pool and the cost of deleting and rebuilding forts to help get CP up negates the savings of skipping the two card colony option. So does anyone know if there is any advantage at all to a vassal?

I thought perhaps it might allow me to build units in the country but no luck there either, so far I see nothing that would make me ever want to try for vassal again.
