there are automatic generated messages if you are doing well, stating mission is in progress.

after the 10 years, thus about 1861 you will have a detailed report which of the missions you fulfilled how long / a percentage of ordered time.

dont focus on the missions anyway, after ten years there are no more missions.

the costs will increase every 5 units of building you constructed and since the construction time is extended and cotton in other places of the world will be set free by event around the civil war, you barely can reach a hundred percent of the mission.

before 1.02 i tested it with building ALL cotton plantations in lucrative spots...didnt work out

for the navy mission, you need the resources for better things and cant upgrade older vessels not even in war... wait for ironclads before investing too much, will see some ships by event of the civil war either

however, prone to throw them into disarray.

i understood last year, that the missions were designed to boost prestige (what they still do) but we had a nasty side effect in the game with the calculation of winning if having x-times as much prestige than the player.
AI could win the game within 6 years against beginner, 8-9 against trained players, depending on the country of course.
they had to "dismantle" it.

As for US the 5-structures-rule and the floating event of Civil War (can start in 1858/1859) make the cotton mission useless, no dominance of the world market will be gained.
Other countries have to research before even able to fulfill the mission, thus also no 100% bonus.

But dont worry, since USA will be a coal rich country, it can be lead to a total superior nation before 1WW without problems. is always my favored in PON

hints:

- in the 1850s build in the later CSA territory, then you can boost the economy while getting structures back in the list after the war breaks out. especially MfG, wood, coal mines and everything with few buildings at hand...

- always invest in research as much as you can (after the goldrush in California)

- dont bother with the ranking of the USA, events and scripted things for AI can change the ranking instantly, while you have to wait before the next technologies are set free every five years and then research, military upgrades, special social/educational reforms etc will boost you back to the first ranks pretty soon.
