Multiplayer issue

First multiplayer game was not a resounding success unfortunately. :(

We were playing the Tannenburg scenario, and we got as far as the first reinforcements phase with everything seeming very smooth up to that point - but then it wouldn't leave that phase. We were both clicking end turn to no avail.

In the end we clicked on just about everything but it wouldn't synchronise and realise we had both finished our turns, at my end it was 'already clicked end turn', at my opponents end it was 'waiting for other players'.

Fortunately Tannenburg is small, so we just started again.

And that time we managed to complete it (I lost :( ) with no trouble. So it wasn't anything we didn't understand about the turn sequence or anything, we did the same thing all over and it all worked fine.

In your first attempt, the packet sent by your PC to that one of your opponent, containing the End-Turn notification, was surely lost. Hence the loss of synchro.

I already added timeout handler and replica messages for some events such as: Interceptions, Next Battle message and Next Army Activation message.

Now, if you experience too often such synchro loss in the Grand Campaign, maybe a timeout handler + replica message can be worth also for the End-Turn notification... :love:

More issues...

Quite often (like, 75% of the time) when you attempt to join to a hosted game, it freezes.

The hosting player sees the other player enter the game, but their game will also freeze upon clicking 'exit'.

The joining player doesn't get as far as the lobby, it freezes as soon as you click on the game name.

It happens quite a lot! Most of the time, even. I've played out 3 or 4 little scenarios now, but this has dogged us all the time... :(

As an aside, quite often if the host clicks exit game, it freezes upon returning to the multiplayer screen.


Bummer!

The game seems to work OK-ish (just one game breaker in four small multiplayer games) but connecting is really hard work, as it crashes the vast majority of the time. And it's not the fastest game to start up either unfortunately, so it gets annoying quite fast... :( :bonk:

The problems you're having when connecting the two PCs the first time are not caused by the game itself. DirectX is returning some error code, so the game is not able to establish a connection.
So try to investigate on your connection provider.

Just to give you one tip: it's important you are able to ping each other! If one is not able to ping the other, here the connection fault!

This is rule #1. Use Hamachi or a public IP, so that you have a stable and secure IP connectivity.

On my side I can't do anything if there's no stable IP connectivity, because the fault comes directly from DirectX libraries, as due. :neener:

Mmmm, I'm not convinced... we tried it over Hamachi, still doesn't work. Same again, it freezes on connection. The host sees the other player connect, but the other player's screen is frozen and they don't actually get as far as taking one of the sides.

And there's nothing wrong with the connection,we can ping each other just fine. And play other games over direct TCP/IP, for that matter.

So we should understand what is the error code returned by DirectX...

Let's try so:

set LogfileNetwork=1 inside the WW1.ini and try again the connection.

If the error occurs, post here the generated LogNetwork.txt file, so that we can understand what happened.

Also, there is some antivirus / firewall on either one (or both) PC that blocks communication between the two WW1.exe applications???

There's no antivirus at my end at least (host currently), we've both switched off Windows firewall. No firewall on my router, though the guy at the other hand has a basic firewall in his router. He's going to try again tonight with a different router which has no firewall, so both of us should have basically zero security stuff (ooooer) :p .

I'll try poking at the WW1.ini as we're trying to connect again right now.

Ok, I see tons of....

DirectX call fails in sending packets. :(

I see no errors in logs file.

This makes me think you are having the same problem like mine.

My internet provider does not give me a public IP, so that in simple words I'm within a LAN-like network.
I'm connected to this LAN-like network via a rooter through a wireless network.
So I'm in a private LAN that communicates to a LAN-like network.

Thus, even if I use Hamachi, I'm not able to connect to host nor to host a game, the game freezes like what happens to you.

Do you have a similar situation?

Given that they said they did succeed to connect at least one time, I don't think the network configuration can be looked at as the issue. If the network configuration made it impossible, they would never connect.

This is what gets me too. We did manage to get a couple of games going.



As a bit of a test I knocked up a very basic hello world style telnet server on my computer, and a friend of mine in the US just managed to connect to it using my IP address, and we said hi to each other over it. Just a bit of socket code. Although I had to take the router out to get it to work.

So... I'm pretty sure the IP works. I'll try again to play without the router in the way and see if that fixes things, but... we did get it working three times, with the router, so, I'm not really expecting it to help.

FWIW the guy I was playing with could open a socket successfully to my computer using that IP address.

So I really don't think it's a network issue. His computer can definitely see mine, and can open a TCP/IP connection to it.

Besides. Have a look at the attached jpg. You can see the other player connecting, so there has evidently been a successful connection between the computers, or else how did that name get there? The client has sent some credentials over, but something then implodes and makes the client end freeze. And the other player does not get allocated to a side.

Happens every time now without fail, we're starting to wonder if those games we had the other day were a hallucination... :(

This is exactly what happens to me. The host receives my credentials, but my client fails to establish a connection because not able to send packets.

Is the "Is this an Internet game ?" check-box on?

But it is sending packets in other apps, and presumably that name 'Bo Derek' went over in a packet. I've even done a bit of file sharing with that guy with WASTE, and he could open up a telnet connection to my IP address.

And we managed to play three short games, though the first one had a synchronisation issue.

I really don't think there's anything wrong with the IP address.

Is the "Is this an Internet game ?" check-box on?


We tried it with it checked and unchecked, doesn't seem to make any odds.

I will ask Tamas and 06 Maestro who make some try with you. Unfortunately, I'm not able to test MP over Internet, for the reasons I posted before, so I can't debug this stuff. Maybe they can find the solution.
