Some initial Problems

Mon Dec 08, 2008 12:28 pm

I recently bought WWI, installed the patch g, and am currently ploughing thro' the process of trying to understand what I've got. To date, I've tried the tutorials which I found to be very helpful and informative and played three times the Tannenberg scenario. I'm now into Serbia.

The introduction has worked only once, but when it did, it was impressive. Most times I get a blank screen. In terms of the game, it seems relatively stable although I've had some problems. Firstly - graphics - on my machine, quite high end, running XP, I have a situation where the colours appear to fade in and out. Difficult to explain but for the counters, these fade from their original colours to a kind of dark shadow, then back to the original. This happens continuously. It is not machine-related, it doesn't happen with any other application.

At the end of the second movement turn of Tannenberg, the game freezes for between 9 and 13 minutes. I assume this is allowing the AI, which I've got as default, to makes decisions. Seems a long time though.

It does seem cumbersome to deploy reinforcements. In one game of three, the program insisted I could not deploy to one Russian army as it would exceed its limit. At the time, this army had only one corps attached. Also on a number of occasions I found it difficult to get up the sub-menu relating to placement when over an army counter on the map. This was improved a bit when I switched from animated icons to square counters.

I really think there is a great game here and I'm looking forward to getting into it.

Any thoughts - particularly on the graphics issue.

Hi Bern, and welcome to the forums :)

Since this is mostly about technical issues, I'll move the thread to the tech forum

Sorry - a couple more queries I forgot. Two of the map views seem identical - strategic and military. I can detect no difference between the two. The strategic map does not highlight objectives in any of the scenarios I've looked at.

Also, a related issue, and probably a silly question, how do I get up the screen which shows objectives?

Welcome Bern, I can't answer the other problems, but I think in this case it is their feeble attempt to highlight the units movement range. It gets light and dark, very hard to discern. And I don't think it is very accurate, showing that an area is in range, but when I move, the unit don't make it there? Good luck figuring the other filters.

Well, some quick tips:

- Disable the "GIve AI full time" option (Options window), if enabled. This will reduce considerably the AI timings

- Strategic map mode (2nd button, F2 key) shows the scenario/campaign objectives highlighted, you will see. Also, cities with star symbol close to the town name are the stratigic objectives.

- Graphic problems... very strange indeed. Video card problems? Have you tried playing the game with the "Play intro video" option disabled (WW1 Configurator tool)?

Many thanks for responding. Thanks also to VonRocko.

'Give AI full time' was disabled during the play of Tannenberg. I've tried Serbia and now Palestine and am not getting a similar delay.

I have re-checked - there is no difference between the F1 and F2 map displays apart from the fact that in Palestine, one region - Amman changes colour. The stars are there denoting objectives however. I still cannot get up the screen which outlines scenario objectives prior to play tho :bonk: . How do I do this?

As to the graphic issue it is not card related. Oddly, I saw a similar effect in a screen shot of Palestine AAR. This does seem to have a game purpose - possibly it is highlighting of available movement regions in one case, and, in the other maybe trying to show the affiliation of detatched units. Either way, I really think it is very distracting.

Ok, I understood. Playing Tannenberg scenario, you will find indeed no big changes between the F1 and F2 map modes, because the only scenario target is Koenigsberg! ;)
Palestine & Serbia scenarios have instead more scenario targets... so you will see the difference.

It's like you said. The blinking yellow areas highlight the regions reachable by movement or redeployment. You will see very soon they are not distracting, but very very useful! ;)

Many thanks - OK I think I've got it. After several hours, things are getting clearer and some frustration is being replaced by a level of anticipation.

Do you ever sleep?

I slept, but I'm now already working on 1.05... a lot of new features, improvements, scenario corrections and, last but not least, bug fixes will come!

Luca: When can we expect 1.05? I think I will suspend my frustration until then.
