I'm wondering if I need it.
Vertical synch is used to keep your video frames the same as your monitor refresh. So if your monitor refresh is at 60hz, your frames inside the game will not go over 60, which means, typically, that you will have a steady frame rate of 60 (Unless of course that your frames in the game are lower than 60; if they are consistently above 60, vertical synch will cap them at 60.)
Vertical synch is usually used to keep a steady frame rate, preventing huge swings in frames. Also, vertical synch is used when there is noticeable tearing of the video image.
In a game like WWI, I wouldn't think that using vertical synch would do much good. For shooters and flight simulator and racing games, keeping a steady framerate is oftentimes important.
