Does the AI 'learn'?

Tue Nov 09, 2010 10:48 am

Hi
I was browsing the directory and found some AI html logs which looked pretty interesting. References to Neural Net, which is a learning AI isnt it? I also checked the options, and see a way to delete the AI cache?

Is this a true neural net game? Does the AI learn? If so, that is pretty impressive. I remember so long ago that there was a shareware WW1 grand strat game out there (must have been late 90s) which also claimed to have neural net framework. Pretty interesting game too.

I cannot really comment as have only played the game properly since yesterday, but repeat playing of the 1914 scenario (to get the hang of the game) I see that the AI (as central powers) appears not to be that scripted. Or at least I get that impression playing.

Also, does it become better if I click on 'give the AI more time', or 'use all behaviours'? Playing previous AGEOD titles I usually click on these, but by default they are off with this game.

Thanks (and understanding the game is no easy task, although I have mastered moving, reinforcement and intercepts. Quite fun).

Yes, the AI 'learns'. Not sure if you have seen it, but there's a thread about that with a post from Calvinus here: http://www.ageod-forum.com/showthread.php?t=17777.

As is recommended there,I generally have both AI options on. I'm not sure how much of a difference it makes in the AI's ability, but from what I understand does perform better with both of these options on. Difficulty is another matter; setting it to 4+ is ok if you dont mind the AI being able to freely redeploy armies to another front(during the redeployment phase) and being able to deploy reinforcements outside major cities. This generally helps the AI's performance, but it's still a cheat, so it's up to you whether you mind if the AI cheats(a little) or not.

I dont think I need the AI to cheat at the moment as I am loosing badly! My NW in Russia is down to -8 and lots of desertions! Challenging enough already.

So this also is a pretty neat AI as well. Why is this title so overlooked? Hardly any decent reviews, especially for the Gold edition.

Yes, it has not received as much attention as it would deserve :(

I just had a question when you delegate offensives for a paticular front for your forces. Does the computer transport troops to the location and actually attack? Or, does it just augments the supply to armies located where the offensive is suppose to take place?

Great Offensives is not an AI-mechanic (so to speak) but a game mechanics. It simulates the effort needed to prepare for a main offensive. So you actually have to reinforce the armies in question (if needed) and make the attack(s) yourself, as usual.
