To avoid frustration in your initial games I would suggest concentrating on the following;
1. The phase/turn design. I suspect that quite a few players had some difficulty in trying to make things happen that just could not happen due to the portion of a turn they were in. Certain things can only be done at certain times. Just how to accomplish some of these things, such as "redeployment" is worth learning before you start. Know how many months you get to each of the various turns. You cannot really make a decent plan if you don't know how many phases you have per turn, or how many months are in each turn.
2. Learn the difference of playing "army by army mode" or wego mode. Decide which one you are going to play initially and read about the rules particular to that mode.
3. Familiarized yourself with the battle screen and siege screen and how to move units in that screen.
4. Check out staking limits. Some may have thought there was a problem with the game because they could not add a unit to a given stack, but it was due to the terrain or a particular Generals' limitations.
This is a fairly basic list, but should help on reducing the reading initially.
I like to do the same thing with a new game-learn the minimum basics; then play. After playing a while then you have some specific questions that you can search the rules for. That's a quicker way to learn IMO.
Enjoy the fray and happy campaigning.
