To play in solo mode the 4 players scenario? 'Cause it was strongly discouraged to do so with "old" WW1.

aka: can I play only as Russia and let the AI handle the rest without issues? I'm a bit frightened by the scope of the whole alliance scenario, so it would be an easier step to jump in the game.

Yes, you can definitely play one country by itself in the 4 player scenario. Your allies do okay and it lets you learn the basics. In my first game I played as Austro-Hungary and let the AI control Germany and it worked out alright. Russia is a good choice as well, because it lets you focus on things on land and ignore the navy. One thing to remember though, your WHOLE alliance only gets one diplomatic action each diplomatic phase. So if you send a request to a country, then your ally can't send a request. Just something to remember.
