A Diplomatic Gaffe

Sat Jan 31, 2009 12:36 am

This is odd. Jan-Feb 1916, Diplomacy phase, latest patch (i). I have two level 2 Amb in Belgium according to the left hand column, although only one Amb appears in the Country [column 2]. I give a mission to one of the Amb. An envelope appears appropriately in the left column, but all of the Amb assignments in the Dip Management column disappear  .

I then tried the GB Dip assignments and was unable to assign anyone at all. When I returned to the French Dip management window, the original assignments had re-appeared. I tried the mission to Belgium again and again all assignments disappeared :bonk: .

I decided to forget the Dip phase and went to the Military phase where the game froze. I do have a save game if you'd like to see it.

It's a known display bug. Scheduled for fix.

Thanks. Herewith the saved game.

Overall this game has produced several problems -

[1] Numerous hangs. I've now excluded WWI from anti virus activity - it's AVG. The hangs keep happening regularly however. Usually I can get around this by saving at the end of every phase and re-loading; sometimes I can get through the hang by continually pressing the pause/unpause key.

[2] This is a game where the Russians are experiencing mutinies every turn - as a result, the Russian army on the E. Front barely exists. Fortunately for the Entente, the CP has not been very active here.

[3] Some three turns ago, I despatched two corps from GB to a revolting African colony - they seem to have vanished. I've had no notification that they have been intercepted or that they have run into a hurricane - they just haven't arrived.

[4] I still can't move my corps from Brit Africa to the Hun in Kamerun. The game continues to tell me there is no movement path. Has the adjacency been looked at?

[5] I played the Peter O'Toole event and the Arab revolt but El 'Awrence has not shown up anywhere and I can't build the Arab corps.

[6] Since around the middle of 1915, I've been trying naval raids in various locations around three each turn - I believe there is a 50% chance. In my case, not one single raid has been successful at least I've had no notification to that effect.

There have been a number of other oddities to the extent that this game has now become more of a test-bed than an actual game. I wondered, is there any chance that the addition of the various patches could have caused something fundamental in the game to break.

Fixing some stuff creates what is called "regression" bugs, i.e. it damages things that were working correctly before...that's why your reports are critical to help us track and correct those

I'm very confident these hangs are caused by the sound engine. Next patch has a lot of fixes on the sound engine.

Patches cannot "fix" the errors in savegame reverting history back, sorry. :(

Ok, I will have a look there, thanks.

As written in the Change Log, these bugs are fixed, but not for older savegame, sorry.

Points #3 and #6 could have been generated by "regression" bugs. I simply have to investigate, yes.

The hangs you are suffering are most probably the out of memory / memory leaks of the sound wrapper, now finally eradicated thanks to great support provided by the developer of irrKlang library.

The other points are oddities and incosistencies inside your savegame (generated by old bugs, of course) that cannot be corrected by the patch, sorry... :(

Are the sound problems supposed to be already fixed in 1.05i? Because I still seem to have "hangs" in between songs. And when is the next patch to be expected?

Thanks for all of that. Sorry to keep troubling you with these things, especially as most seem to be regression.

Does the problem with the sound wrapper occur even if I don't use the background music?

The new sound wrapper will be released with the official patch, so in 1.05i you have yet the old version. Unfortunately, I'm frozen waiting for the Spanish texts correction. :(
The only positive point of this unpleasant situation is that I'm spending this time adding the most stuff and fixes as I can...

No need for apologizes! ;) Your support is welcome, and you have never been a "trouble" for me!

Music and sounds. So the problem comes also from the sound effects (they are MP3 too, even if smaller than musics, of course).

It was simply a display error on refresh of window, and you have to close and reopen the window.

I fixed the bug. Next patch.

Ok, finally tested. The naval raids work normally, but remember you have to move the naval squadrons close to an enemy coastal city. In addition, if you don't have B, BC and BB warships, no EP hit points is suffered by the enemy. ;)
Finally, the message notification is displayed in the group of "Naval Battles" argument (see Messages Customization from the Options window), so I guess you missed it because it's printed (by default) in the Game Log only... :(
I'm moving this notification to the "Logistics" section, that is commonly displayed on the popup message window, so much more visible, ok? ;)
