Unit Skill and replacements

Hi all, I just have a couple of quick questions as I work through this game.

Firstly - Do units skills improve through the game? For example if a particular corps starts as "Reservists" but survives, say, 6 months of combats will it improve to "regular" or "veteran" quality?

Second question, if I click on one of the buttons on the top tool bar I can spend EP to build various units and choose how many turns they will arrive in. Are these units in addition to scheduled reiforcments or does this represent my only source of replacement units?

Hi!

No, the units do not improve. This I think is a necessary abstraction, since you can replace losses of active and veteran units as well, and they also retain their expertise. So you can say, experienced troops are sent to the experienced units.

As for building units - these are ALL you will receive! Be careful though. Not only they cost money, they cost manpower - each unit you order decreases your RP flow by one.

Units do not improve in quality, but during the war, in the building options, you may improve the firepower value of some corps (i.e. the figure in the red circle on the top-left side of the counter). If oyu do so, it costs an eye, but all your units of the same type will have extra firepower (representing guns and machine-guns in supplement, and granting a +1 to +3 die-roll bonus in battle)

That's not urgent, but it would be nice and realistic to have units surviving battles improve, at least those of lower level.

Why not, although due to high WW1 casulaty rate, veterans did not survive long enough to 'train' the new recruits...

First of all, new recruits did not survive long enough to "become" veterans also.... ...

So we end up with recruits almost all of the time

On average, a French regiment went through the war with having its basic troops complement refilled 4 times (in other words it was destroyed and recreated four times)

My great grand father made WWI from the first day until the end. He was conscript before the beginning of the war.

Since I know these figures, I imagine how lucky he was ...

There were not all dead, but heavily wounded, transfered in other units... But the turn over is very high...
