Problem with WiA Initalizing

Fri Jul 01, 2011 8:48 pm

I dl'ed the free WiA game in the Paradox newsletter, from Gamersgate, and installed the game, but now everytime I start it I get the message that my serial number is too short, and to input it again.

The fly in the ointment, though, is that there is no place to enter the serial number. Then add to that the AGEsettings is not working. So all in all, I have a game I cannot play due to a serial number entry that I cannot enter.

As an aside, When I use either the start menu config utility or the actual icon, nothing happens. No error message, no initialization of the application, nothing.

I half suspect the cause may be that I did not run WiA for the first time until after I had disconnected from the net. And due to the new DRM scheme Paradox attached to it for Gamersgate, it is now causing the problem.

Akrita suggested I try to copy the serial number to the gen.opt file. That also did not help.

So any help resolving this issue would be great. I really want to try the War of 1812. :thumbsup:

You should have a folder called Config Utility in your start menu WIA file on your main menu.
It is two tabs, display and serial. Click on the serial tab. Put your serial number on this screen.
See if this works.

The config utility does not open, when I try to start the app, nothing occurs. I have tried both the start menu and clicking on the app itself.

Hmm. I do not know what to say.
Maybe we are not using the same language or program. I am not in the program file. I am on the open program menu.

On my computer, I click on the image which allows all programs to be open.
I go to the WIA menu.
One of the options is a configuration utility.
If this is not working, sorry, my best guess.

Gray_Lensman, I had nothing open but the folder with the config utility, and I minimized that. No box had popped up behind it.

I checked the length of the serial number Paradox gave me on Gamersgate against the one I recieved from AGEOD for PoN. The Paradox serial was 10 characters shorter than the one for PoN.

I have no idea why the config utility is not working, but I am now positive the reason for the 'too short' serial error when beginning the game is due to that bad serial number.

Would anybody have any idea how I could go about getting that serial number replaced?

I would PM PThibaut or Pocus explaning the problem and providing your Gamergate account info and the bad serial.
Surely they can provide you with a good one. :)

Stupid questions...

I'm curious: How widespread are these activation problems?

Have many people followed the instructions in the Paradox Forum Newsletter and at the GamersGate website and had no problems at all downloading, installing, activating, and actually running the freebie BOA2/WIA?

Are these activation difficulties just very isolated, unusual cases?

Berto, a few others have posted on the Paradox forum with the same problem, but as to how widespread it is, I do not know.

@Arsan, I will do that. Thank you for the suggestion.

I found the problem and below is the PM I sent to Phil. :)

Phil, since my last PM I have continued to dig into the problem and I have found the cause. Below is the entry section for the serial number from the unmodified WiA Gen.opt file that came with my DL:

7. Serial number (unencrypted, keep this file for you only)
UseZip = 0
ActivationLevel = 1

As you can see, and I found out after digging through the PoN Gen.opt file the following line is missing:

Serial =

I added that line with my serial number and now the game boots up just fine! The Config utility still does not work, but I can now play the game! :thumbsup:

Thanks for all of your help, and you folks now have a loyal follower who will purchase more of your games!
