WIA is one of my favorite games ever. Easy to learn but with a great deepness an excellent game for me, without doubt!

The second title, Wars in America is an improvement over the first in nearly every regard. Get it friend, you'll not regret your decision.

I am considering buying it. Steepness of a game's learning curve is the deciding factor for me as I don't have much time for gaming. If I'm fairly competent with AACW will I have a leg up with Wars in America?

AACW is the more complex game but the games share many similarities so you should have no problems quickly understanding WiA.

Yep, big floppy tri-cornered hat. Worth all that.
ACW will provide a leg up. Wars in America has very many short games which are each a challenge, but focused and playable.
The 1775 and 1776 longer scenarios are, in my modest view, the most perfect games ever designed.
For ease of play, you will love the application of the ACW system to a more frank and playable game. Not as complex as ACW, but fully as rich.
The production systems differ in this way, also. ACW is kind of complex to produce and support units. WIA requires some thought on this front, but not such planning and risk.
No debate, put the cash down and enjoy.

I strongly second Durk's endorsement. As a guy who has played countless WWII era games, it is refreshing to see a game dedicated to the wars in North America during the 17th-19th centuries. It is a unique theater of war which offers many challenges. The AI will give you a good fight, too.
