Finland and the Russo-Swedish war

Thu Dec 06, 2007 8:27 pm

Greetings from Finland everyone,

After trying the demo I decided to buy the full game today. My first impressions are very positive but I noticed that there are several historical inaccuracies in the Russo -Swedish war scenario and the map of Finland that I think should be fixed in a patch.

Firstly, Finland on the game map has many regions whose name are quite inappropriate for the period. For example Kotka, Kouvola, Lahti and Esbo are all places that were insignificant villages in Napoleons time and grew into places of importance during the late 19th century or even later. Conversely, many of the important towns of that period are nowadays quite small. Also there are fortifications on the map in places there should be none and some regions don't have any forts though they should. So, without more ado, here are my suggestions for the names of the Finnish provinces and notes on whether they should have a fortifications or not. When choosing names I tended to go for the Swedish ones since it was the language of government in Finland in those days and also because they are much more pronounceable to non-Finns.

Current province name = name suggestion and fort/no fort (and its name)

Rauma = Rauma, no fort
Abo = Åbo, no fort
Salo = Ekenäs, a small fort: Hanko
Lahti = Tavastehus, no fort
Esbo = Kysrkoslätt, no fort
Kouvolla = Heinola, no fort
Sveaborg = Sveaborg, a big fort
Lovisa = Lovisa, fort: Svartholm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svartholm_fortress
Kotka = Fredrikshamn, fort: same name, it was a fortified town
Lappeenranta = Villmanstrand or Lappeenranta, fort: same name as region
Vyborg = Vyborg, no fort or a very small one (I think most of the fortifications in the city were quite outdated)
Saimaa = Kexholm or Käkisalmi, no fort
Karjala = Kannas or Karjalan kannas(Finnish for isthmus/Karelian isthmus. When Finns speak of the Isthmus they mean the Karelian one.), no fort

Secondly, the starting positions of the scenario are wrong. A large part of Eastern Finland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Finland) had already been a part of Russia for 65 years at the start of the war of 1808. Kotka, Lappeenranta (current region names) and everything east of them should be controlled by the Russians at the start of the scenario. Norrland (the little box that represents the northern parts of Finland and Sweden) should in my opinion be the third victory point objective in the scenario instead of Vyborg.

So, a great game but with these corrections it could be even better. Keep up the good work!

Excellent stuff..I'll make it for next patch. Note that all the special Swedish accents and letters are ruled out, as they do not work well with some O/S...

Thanks

True, however I believe it will be more correct to spell Abo = Aabo

Great! If I come across any more information that could help improve this scenario I'll be sure to post it here.

And if you can't use special letters I'd just drop the accents and umlauts and leave it at that. Otherwise you might just end up with a bunch of names that don't resemble the actual pronunciation at all. For example the letter Å in Åbo is pronounced as a kind of longish o. You can listen to an example of how it should be said at the Wikipedia article for Åbo/Turku here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%85bo

In 1.02c the faction sides are 'backwards' in this scenario. The Swedes seem to be the coalition, and the Russians seem to be the french empire, however, the regions are set with Sweden in french loyalty and vice versa..Consequently, Sweden slowly becomes Russian-controlled, and so on.
I'm pretty sure it's the faction setting, as I got a message on Swedish turn 1 that I'd gained more support with the population of Sveaborg 1% and the loyalty stood at Coalition 1% French Empire 99%.

Is there anyway to fix this manually in the scenario file? It'd be nice if it was just a text line to change or something and not have to wait for a patch.

Here is the loyalty fix: just replace the scenario file and the cities files in the proper folders (scens and includes respectively).

Thanks :coeurs:

Thank you for the work on this!
THere seems to be a big problem with this scenario fix-The Swedish land units have become Westfallen land units, some land units have become naval units, and Russian naval units have become Spanish..It's all over the place.

Most likely because we do not have the same DB...arghh...my mistake, I forgot I used an expanded DB (for future scenarios dev)...sorry, this will force you to repatch the game...

I'll work out a fix that would make it compatible with 1.02c :p leure: :nuts:

Done, take the following fix valid for 1.02c. Please note I also included the finnish partisans model fix (was not displaying any image before).

To improve, just replace manually the scenario file and the cities files in the proper folders (scens and includes respectively). The models file goes into GameDate/Models

Thanks :coeurs:
