Spanish Campaign?

Mon Dec 31, 2007 6:38 pm

Im wondering if anyone has won as the Spanish? I've tried several times and have done alright. Generaly I let the French have the middle of the country, and try to build up my forces in three areas. In the south by Seville. In the middle east along the coast. And in the mountainous North west corner. Avoiding combat totaly unless the french invade one of my safe zones. Then only using enough force to turn them back. Slowly building and waiting till I get some decent generals. In my current game it is mid-1810 and I have basicly won the game. So the strategy works. But I used random generals to at least have a shot at getting something worthwhile.

Couple of observations from my latest campaign.

The Spanish get way too many raider and militia replacements. Those two categorys are always full after the first year and never get used. I have changed the Spanish insurrection event to only give 4 each instead of 8 and they still build up to max too quickly.

Not enough line replacements in the Spanish insurrection event. I doubled them from 2 to 4 and still ran short consistently.

I am adding hvy cav replacements to all campaigns.

I still havent figured out how, when, and why new elements are added. What pre-conditions allow it?

Nor can I for the life of me work out which units can be combined without trying to physicaly combine every unit one at a time.
(very frustrating.) Not sure if the Spanish forces are supposed to have all those tiny units? But it can be pretty daunting trying to organise them into some sort of decent OOB. ( Not nessesarily unfun though. )

I found I had to be very patient and avoid big battles at all cost unless my safe zones were penetrated. Your irregulars and raiders will keep the french busy enough. Hopefully. :)

Interesting comments. I would make use of your stats and replacement changes. FYI, much of your strategy resembles that followed by the Spanish Juntas historically... :cwboy:

Well........I've been altering the Spanish campaign alot. Trying things out and learning a bit more about how things work.

Have added brigade recruitment for the French and English, as well as add the Hvy cav replacement, and change the Insurrection event. Most changes have turned out alright. Mucho time spent tweaking the brigade recruit. But I think I have the right mix now between how expensive / powerfull it is. Would be way easy to have it over balance the game. *laugh* One thing Im having trouble with. It's easier to add a copy brigade than change one's make up. I think it's a naming issue. Anyone know where the file with allowed unit names is located? Changed the arty recruit to be 1 arty and 1 lt.cav. Cant seem to find where to change the text you see in the various options ledger page though. Work on that tonight if I have time.

I am currently investigating a MAJOR potential bug... not one that crashes the game but that unbalances it terribly...I'll know more of that tomorrow.. :king:

I suspect the "remove units" function in the event does not work well or completely, hence the French may well end up with the Grande Armée in Spain for ever... :indien:

Funny you should mention that. I haven't said anything because I wasn't sure if I had messed events up in my game or if it was already in there? But niether the french are leaving, nor is Wellsley being replaced by Moore.

The Cintra event fires. If thats the correct one. But nothing happens. It fires twice actually. As alot of events I've noticed.

Was wondering - does this bug still exist in the latest patch?

Well the Guard gets removed normally since the new patch (except for once when one of the Guard brigades lost the 'name' regiment and stayed in play). But what about the other line brigades in the Grande Armee? Are they supposed to be sent back home too? (Don't think so according to excel sheet) If that is the case, it would be nearly impossible for the French player to win the scenario without substantial reinforcments.
