Tips on backing up the game

Wed Jan 09, 2008 3:22 pm

This may seem like a real basic question, but what is the best way to back up this game? I've got a hard drive threatening to go out.

Is it better to back up the main setup file from the original download and each of the setup files for each patch?

Or, can you simply copy the entire game folder over from the hard drive to a CD/DVD?

If you uninstall the game from the hard drive and tried to simply copy the game folder back from a DVD, would you have everything fully installed?

I would assume that you don't uninstall because that would remove the registry keys, etc.

Stupid question but is a duplicate of the game folder on DVD the same as the game folder on the hard drive as far as all of the patched files and the ability to run it?

Humm... not sure about this game, but in many other the full folder backup doesn't work OK (registry, anticopy systems...) :siffle:

The best is to backup on a CD/DVD/memory stick/portable Hard disc... the downloaded setup installer AND a simple notepad TXT file with your serial number.
This two are the only things you shouldnt ever lose :p leure:
I usually do this as soon as i buy any digital download game. Just in case...
Patches are optional.
You can freely download them when you want and, knowing Pocus, your backed up patches will grow old very quickly :niark:
In any case, backing the last patch is enough... they all are inclusive.

Cheers!

Glad I asked. I figured there would be an issue of making sure the registry and files all conform. Thanks.

Copying the entire game directory onto a backup disk or DVD and then retrieving it when needed works quite well. Loosing the registry entries means mostly that you get some extra work when patching.

Of course, keeping the installer and your serial key means you can simply install, then download the latest patch and be back in business, though you won't have any savegames you might be missing.
