Thoughts on a diplomatic model for a Grand Campaign

Sun Nov 18, 2007 1:24 pm

If you want a fairly simplistic diplomatic model for a grand campaign why not crib some of Avalon Hills ideas from the Napoleonic Wars game.

Coalition Majors
England (if defeated game ends)
Spain (can only be defeated if all its major cities are occupied by the French).
Russia
Austria
Prussia

All other nations are minors…. Eg Italian states, Holland, Denmark etc…These can be conquered and forced to be French or Coalition Satellites.

You already have a way of recognising when a major nation is defeated by its national morale (Spain is an exception).

Armistice Phase (1 month)
Once a coalition major nation is defeated the French are allowed to make a single strategic decision which affects how likely and how quickly the defeated nation rejoins the coalition.
For example
Create a satellite state such as the Duchy of Warsaw etc…etc..

Pro French Phase (1 year)
The French can take one corps of the defeated nation’s troops under its own control. The composition of the force, leaders etc is determined randomly or in conjunction with the strategic decision made in the armistice phase.
The Pro French nation goes into a mode where it can only rebuild its army very slowly to a pre-programmed maximum.
French units can enter its territory at will.

Neutral Phase (1 year 1 year* depends on French actions in Armistice Phase)
One year after defeat the nation enters a neutral phase .
The expeditionary force formed in the pro French phase is disbanded and returned to the defeated nations force pool.
The AI can’t declare war on France
The nation can build, deploy and organise its army to its maximum potential with in its borders.
French & Coalition troops can’t enter the borders with out a declaration of war.

Pro Coalition Phase (1 year* depends on French actions in Armistice Phase)
Two years after defeat the nation becomes Pro Coalition this effectively puts the nation on a ready for war basis with a probability of joining the coalition on a percentage which increase every month to a pre-programmed maximum.

Other Events
Anglo American wars, Russo Turkish wars work on a fixed percentage trigger which is rolled for every year. For example England has a 1 in 10 chance of going to war with USA every year, when the event kicks in a randomly selected part of the English navy/army becomes unavailable in Europe for the duration of the war. The end of the war is rolled for every month on a fixed percentage basis etc.etc.

Yes, this is the model used in "War & Peace"... that was fun, although slightly unbalanced... but I am trying to work something along those lines...
