Modding q's Re-Family field and Unit Pool

Fri Nov 07, 2008 11:31 am

I wonder if it's possible for someone to answer a couple of questions. One info and one help with solution type Q.

I've been messing round with changing the brigade structure in the game and I'm trying to figure out exactly what the "family type" field refers to in the units DB file. I suspect it may be the upgrade path that the units take throughout the game. If this is correct, is it also the case that the number after the | in the value e.g.

$famLine|4<<<

refers to the the number of units of that type in the brigade. Is that correct?

Secondly, whilst fiddling with the Brigades I changed the USA_Bde2NY to have 3 infantry regiments and one artillery regiment and as it wasn't added to the unit pool I added 3 to the pool during the first change section in the events file for april 1861 scenario. When I ran a game check, the Brigade was actually appeaing under the Pennsylvania section, (the brigade name was down as Infantry Brigade (NY). A check of the file AACW_DB_Units showed that the last field before the brigade names, the area field was set to $PA. changed this and ran it through CSVSPLITTER, but it still shows up as a PA unit in the game

This the unit line from the

189;USA;$Infantry Bde (NY);uni_USA_Bde2NY;Size 4 3 reg + art;
6;NULL;$uni_txt_USA_Infantry1;$Land;$colUSARegular ;NULL;
$mdl_USA_Inf1|2;$mdl_USA_Inf5|1;$mdl_USA_Art1|1;NULL;
NULL;NULL;NULL;NULL;$famLeader|1;$famLine|3;$famLightArty|1;NULL;NULL;NULL;NULL;NULL;3;0;NULL;$recCity;$NY

All the fields in red are the ones I think could play a part in determining which section of the force pool the unit goes. But are there any others, either in the units file or any of the other files that have an impact. The change unit pool command in the events file refers to the uni_USA_Bde2NY so doesn't appear to be incorrect either. I have managed to add a Cavalry Brigade to the Cav section of the unit pool but can't figure the problem with this Inf Bragde.

One quick Q for interest more that anything else, has anyone tried adding more units to the Infantry unit pool than there are open window slots? just curious as to what would happen, suspect a crash.

Any help would be appreciated.

And BTW I forget who did them, but thanks to whoever did those XLS files for the game data.

No worries on the second issue, not sure how,but after fiddling with I don't know what. The unit now appears in the correct NY section of the replacement pool.

After a bit more fiddling, I'm not sure that the Family field is used for the upgrade path. Could someone advise on what this field actually does? Altering the value after the | does not appear to have had any noticeable affects when checking out the unit in the game.

Thanks

This is the TO&E of the unit in fact, so it will be used to check for replacements or when you combine 2 units.
