Sounds good. I don't have a period depth chart for Pamlico Bay. I expect it is very similar to Pamlico Sound, but I can't tell you with certainty.

In the absence of complete depth information, I think it looks as if Pamlicoe Bay (1393) and Pamlicoe Sound (1391), can be kept as Coastal Waters, especially since the Oregon Inlet (1388) and Albermale Sound (1386) can be changed to No_FreezeShallow, which will effectively prevent deep water shipping from entering those areas. By doing it this way I can allow passage from Currituck Sound (1387) to Oregon Inlet (1388), but it will only be useable by shallow water craft. (Allowing the purists to perform this transit). I still may modify the graphics somewhat to eliminate the Oregon Inlet protrusion and make the Naval units first move into Currituck Sound (1387) in order to use the Oregon Inlet.

I do remember reading about the shallow channels across Pamlico Sound and the difficulties they caused for the Roanoke Island expedition. Troops had to be unloaded at Fort Hatteras, and reloaded into shallow draft vessels. Whatever book I read it in did have a partial chart.

Eliminating the Oregon Inlet protrusion is a good step forward, as it makes the use of the inlet moddable.

Gray, I probably missed an announcement, but does your moving on to fixing river linkages imply that your RR fixes are all finished?

Annual Reports of the War Department - p 268

New Bern harbor dredged to 8' (low water) - 1871 (high water would be about +3') 8' is shallow by my definition.

I guess when I said big, I just meant wide. The Neuss is about 1.5 miles across there. It can rise about 15' there during a bad flood or hurricane, but those are temporary conditions, and have their own detrimental effects on navigation.

From my reading, all the NC Sounds (and New Bern) should be shallow. It was possible to get transports over some of the bars and through the channels (with considerable work), but no possibility for deep draft warships.

JW is spot on. They are in fact quite shallow. The OB are very difficult to understand in a historical context, because they are in fact quite new and have little history (relatively speaking). It's believed, IIRC, that they have appeared and disappeared over previous centuries.

Anyhoo, they are currently shallow and there's just no way deep draft stuff could navigate there.

My 2 farthings.

Btw, river linkages - great stuff!

To add another 2 cents- I would agree with Jabberwock and PBBoeye on this one. The whole outer banks and sounds area is a veritable minefield for navigation purposes. Lots of stories of groundings and shifting sandbars, etc. Definitely not a good place to take a deep draft vessel of any kind.

Nice to see some historical work being done on harbor entrances and whatnot Gray. Kudos! :gardavou:

How will it affect this change to the possibility of blockading Richmond??
On reality, blockading the end of the James estuary (Hampton Roads) was enough to block Richmond's Port but on game you have to block the harbor exit zone or no blocking is possible.
So if you make this area shallow only it will be difficult for the north to block the CSA capital (only brigs would be allowed?).
