How many units I need to stop a single cavalary???? Thousands???

Looking at the screen shot, you need to be in an offensive posture. Both units are in a defensive posture, so they will just sit and look at each other. Change Johnston to offensive and he will at least try to attack. The cav may retreat if set to avoid combat, byt they will also likely retreat towards home.
