More battle transparency please!

Tue Nov 25, 2008 2:16 pm

Hi,
I bought the game recently and started a couple of scenarios.
The action on the strategy map seems to be quite interesting as well as the investment management. However:
IMHO the game really lacks a tactical battle screen!!
It is very nice to have 50.000 modifiers taken into account when two stacks battle each other with some obscure result given by the AI but why not have the tactical action take place on a seperate battle map??
I am not asking for much; it can be e.g. 2D bird's eye view with NATO symbols- anything- but why only two stacks when the AI allegedly calculates even ranges, whether it is Infantry vs. arty on an open plain, who fires first etc.
In its current form a battle is just too abstract...

Hi Boney,
I have asked for this in a previous thread, but AGEOD team seem to ignore
this issue which is a pity.
I think it would make the game almost perfect, there is a similar game which i wont name which you can do this in a animated Battle but the AI is pants.

It would be nice to have a tactical element to this game as i play CSA and by
1863 your up against monster US armies so i try and fight most of battles
in the woods. :mdr: :

Hi Boney_N, and welcome to the forums :)

Sorry of your question has gone unanswered, nilam. It is however, something that has been up for discussion before. ;)

AACW is first and foremost an operational game, focusing on the big picture. If it were to go into the tactical aspect of battles, a whole lot of changes and additions would have to be made, e.g. for the AI, for the way PBEM is handled, etc. etc.

There are varying opinions in the community; some think that AACW is best the way it is, others want to be able to command their troops themselves in each battle.

AGEOD currently has no plans for such an expansion to the games. However, it has not been ruled out for some point in the future, but only time can tell what will happen :)

Thanks for the reply Rafiki,

I thought this would be the case, but the problem i have i am not very techi
and most of the threads i read are from the players who understand all
binary factors which are at play when combat occurs.
A good example is the on going saga of arty in divs etc.i read some of these
threads without really understanding what they are talking about.

On the tactical side you could factor in some more traits on CSA side
like a "REBEL YELL" bonus when attacking just to even up the size of the
armies which enter Battle in the later years.
By 1864 i cant see CSA doing anything other than hold ground unless
you are playing a bigger numpty(idiot) than me. :)

If it's any consolation, I have problems myself following the discussions when they dive into the nitty, gritty details of the combat engine ;)

The good news is, you don't need to know every little detail of how the combat engine works to enjoy the game; there are some "best practices" that have evolved, as seen in Runyan's strategy guide, that still get challenged every now and then when new insights point to practices that can be better, but these are the kind of things you pick up on in time after playing the game for a while :)

That said, I have great admiration and am very thankful for those who do go into the depths of the combat engine, testing various aspects of it and trying to find the best representation and the best interaction of the multitudes of variables that factor into it; their efforts have given us an even better game, even if we can fully grasp the exact setups and changes they have put together :)

Thanks for the response Rafiki,

Your quite right, its the learning and trying new things that keeps me interested in this absorbing game.

Im in a pbem game with the new patch and i am doing better as CSA
(62 scenario) though by now i am usually struggling with conscripts,i am now
struggling for WS :(

Keep up the good work.

PS-i think my "REBEL YELL" idea needs investigating further, say a 1% bonus
in the first phase of Battle.
It must have moral effect on the raw recruits in union army,i would be
interested in your views.
