Reinforcement Auto Movement Enhancement

Tue Oct 09, 2007 5:34 pm

Love the game.
Might I suggest that an enhancement be implimented allowing the user to set a hub for reinforcements to be moved to. Say St. Louis in the west, Cinncinati in the Midwest, and Washington in the east? User could designate these either in the setup or on the Draft Page. It would speed up game play and organization and prevent units from being overlooked and then sitting unproductively in out of the way cities. This would be historical, as in reading WT Sherman's biography he lamented the fact to the war department that all the new regiments were being sent to St. Louis and Washington leaving a gaping hole is Kentucky (He was in Lexington with a few militia regiments. The player could them send a few good commanders with training attribute to the city to muster in and train the regiments. It would reduce the 30-40 minute turns by reducing administrative tasks.

I like the idea, though it requires a fair amount of new code and interface work, which lessens the chance of seeing it done.

The assembling points could be set on a state-by-state basis, and should only apply to new units, and militia should perhaps be excluded, since militia is often used as garrisons? It would also be necessary to determine if the units should go as fast as possible (using rail and/or river transport if necessary) or not.

Raf is right, the more stuff to code, the harder it is, especially before NPC is out to see it implemented.

The idea of course is good. You may use ctl-f1 to filter the locked units out. This way you only see on map the units you can actually move as dots and then it's easy to find them and use them.

Maybe have all reinforcements simply appear in the state capitol ... that would make it easier already. But I have to agree to exempt militia from this rule ...

In fact I would prefer most militia not even be recruited and simply appear in every city as a static unit if the enemy attack or approaches the city ... then disband if the area is secure. This will make the need to manually garrison every city behind the llines no longer neccesary. Mobile militia intended to take part in campaign could still be recruited as normally. I guess I am asking for a garrison script?

Nah, that takes away a strategic choice the player needs to make; how and how much do I garrison? Granted, there is some management required for the garrisons, even a bit tedious at times, but not enough to warrant taking that choice away, IMO
