American Navy

Sat Jun 02, 2007 10:52 am

In the Grand Campaign, starting 1775, in 1776 the US gain the Continental Navy, consisting of the Bonne Homme Richard and Blockard Runners.

What is the best use for this units? - As I see because of the supply rules blocking any ports is of only little use; and for hindering the British Navy the US Navy is much too small. Can someone give me any hints? :siffle:

In 1778 you will be able to run them down to the West Indies and pick up some supplies and Cannons.
Till them, Hide them in a Well defended port.

Oftentimes, an overconfident Brit player will split his navy into small packets for quick movement of troops/supplies between various ports. If lucky, Richards can attack a single warship escorting a single transport with hope of causing damage or disrupting Brit plans for the turn. If you are really, really lucky, you might even catch an unescorted transport. Watch how your opponent is using his navy. If you see the Br navy at multiple locations at end of the same turn, he is probably operating with very small packets of ships which can be vulnerable.

It is definitely risky sending the American Navy to sea but sometimes can have an impact. Also if Richards ship is sunk, it will be replaced sometime within perhaps 6 months or a year.

Definitely make sure you have a transport afloat in 78 preferably with a warship escort. The supplies and artillery available in the Carribean can be very valuable...if you can pick them up and get them back to the states.

Against the AI you can use the navy to try to sneak valuable units out of beseiged ports. A human shouldn't let you get away with this, but it allows the navy to be of some use.
