French and Indian War Exhibit

Fri Feb 16, 2007 1:15 am

For those of you interested in the time period and are in the Washington DC area, the Smithsonian is hosting an exhibit on the French and Indian War. It is running from December until July at the Ripley Center (International Gallery). The exhibit is called "Clash of Empires" and the press release says it offers
" More than 300 objects and works of art are on view, including:
• the original surrender document signed by George Washington at Fort Necessity on July 3, 1754
• an original printed copy of Washington's journal of his 1753 diplomatic mission to the Ohio (1 of 8 surviving copies)
• portraits and historical paintings by Benjamin West, Joshua Reynolds, John Singleton Copley, and others
• the only surviving complete pre-Revolutionary War British officer's uniform, which has never been displayed outside of England
• Native American clothing and decorative arts
• a collection of engraved powder horns, representing a unique North American folk art tradition"

The exhibit started out in Pittsburgh back in 2005 and has traveled to Ottowa before coming to Washington. Sounds like it's worth visiting if you're in the area. "He that would make his own liberty secure, must guard even his enemy from oppression; for if he violates this duty, he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself."
