That well travelled William Howe...

Fri Aug 04, 2006 10:14 am

When William Howe replaces Gage, what governed his placement? In one game, I left Gage in Boston with 6 regiments while Howe went with the fleet to capture New York. Gage went poof and the armies in Boston had no leader for a few months.

Another Game, I left Howe in Boston with 6 regiments while I sent Gage with the rest to capture New York. When Howe was promoted he magically appeared on the ships in New York Harbor and the Boston garrison was once again without a commander.

As far as I know, Gage will always disappear when Howe is promoted. The only exception is if Howe gets killed before the promotion happens, in that case Gage hangs around.

My question was mainly concerned with the second aspect of my original post, having Howe magically appear on the New York invasion fleet upon his promotion as well as some background.

Should Howe suddenly appear wherever the greatest concentration of Crown forces is? Should Howe suddenly appear wherever Gage used to be? There seems to be no rhyme or reason.

New information. I left both Howe and Gage in Boston with 8 units (6 foot, 1 artillery, 1 supply). When Howe is promoted, he is back with the New York Invasion fleet, AGAIN leaving Boston with NO commander. The New York invasion fleet only had 5 foot and 1 supply at the time of promotion. I am completely mystified why Howe would leave Boston.

What governs Howe's placement when he is promoted?!?

Theorically (and I checked the script sequence), Howe (2 stars) replace Gage (where Gage is). Then Howe (3 stars) is promoted by replacing Howe (2 stars), same location.
Don't mistake William Howe with Richard Howe though. They are brothers, and Richard is in command of the American Squadron arriving in Boston.

If there is still problem, we will check again by monday.

No, it is clearly William Howe (land commander), not his brother. This is the 1775 1.08 demo. It appears that Howe is showing up where Clinton is. I'll need to run 1 more test to be sure.

I was wrong, Howe is not showing up where Clinton is. I left Gage in Boston, put Clinton on a boat in the middle of Massachusettes bay, then sent the rest of the army overland to Albany. When Howe was promoted, he was with the Albany army, not in Boston where Gage was.

right, the script indicates that the promoted Howe, along with Tryon appears (or move...) in the biggest army. Can leads to some oddities I concur.

Consider that Howe has also a private life and may be sometimes delayed because of a hunting party he attended with friends :fleb:  .

This design decision strikes me as flawed. How is the "biggest army" decided? Do I have to count companies in each army to make sure Howe shows up in the right place, so Boston doesn't become leaderless and get slaughtered (as it has 2 of 3 times during my testing)?

I would much prefer that you use the system Pocus thought was in place (Howe moves to Gage, gets promoted). Everyone knows that staff is what moves armies, and the staff is where the former theatre commander was. With the current system, one bad battle that kills one too many companies can wreck my whole game plan.
