New Game

Tue Jul 11, 2006 5:24 pm

When might we expect some info on the new game, such as scale, timeline, and whether there is more direct player involvement in the tactical battles? Really looking forward to its release.

Is someone being tempted by the feature set of FL perhaps? :)

Aside from the fact that I have zero free time, I must admit the game interests me ... however, I am kind of disinclined towards the hex/turn/UGO format. Thus, besides the strong recommendations of a friend and the Region/WEGO format, it was much easier for me to purchase BoA a while back.

Don't expect much on the tactical part for 2007. We have several projects under the hood though.
Aside from the huge amount of time needed to make a decent tactical engine (I'm thinking more along the line of CoG and not FL), this is also somehow a design philosophy. Perhaps we don't want the players to handle all the aspects down to the last company. This is why you do not directly manipulate the elements of a regiment in BOA, and this won't change.

"I am kind of disinclined towards the hex/turn/UGO format."

I think there are certain games where the WEGO format works (Combat Mission and indeed BoA and EUII) but I can't understand the bandwagon that seems to be against traditional turn based hex type games.

To me there is nothing better. Two games come to mind: Civ and the Campaign Series. There is nothing more fun to me than being able to
move and fire in the same turn. It doesn't make for a realistic game but it's so much more fun than many boring plot and watch games (Combat Mission, BoA and EUII not included - they somehow work well)

All the other plot and watch games seem so tedious to me. What is the attraction to people? Probably not the forum for me to vent about this :)

Cheers, Chris

This is an interesting discussion in fact. IGO-UGO is instant reward, you move, you attack, etc. Far more cumbersome in MP though. WEGO is more "brainy" and can be frustrating: you think a long time to give orders, and then you watch your plan unfold. There is something thrilling on the other hand: will my devious plan succeed, etc.

One can say that the same parrallel can be established between RTS and TBS. instant gratification vs thrilling planning.

I had raised the question of the preferences and reasons for various game formats here:

The thread has a pretty good survey of the various views.

I was raised on turn based board games but I like all formats really. I like the breath of fresh air games of different formats bring I guess. Just seems the old personal preference thing though people can get quite opinionated about this subject!

Oh I don't expect a full stategic and tactical game because I can surely see where that would be a major project. I would just like to see a bit more player involvement in the tactical aspects of it. Even a simple deployment of units with some general orders and then just let it run to conclusion. Somewhat like the Legion/Spartan games from Slitherine.
