Question, does it matter what Posture a irregular unit is set 2 when Ordered to ambush.

Yes it can matter. If he succeed he will switch to offensive, but if he fails, he stays in his current posture.

Passive: penalty if fighting, bonus to retreat and can stay stealthy in a region with a structure.
Defensive: no bonus or penalties.

ezjax -- I put them in the orange (whatever that one is called) when I think they can handle anything that comes at them -- otherwise, leave them on defensive and ambush. Only use it in proper terrain though -- irregulars and indians don't fare well against the regulars in open fields.
