What's the deal with sieges?

Fri May 19, 2006 6:43 am

In a PBEM game, I had 2-3 British regiments bottled up at Hartford and under siege. After bring over the bulk of the Continental army, I ordered an assault. Since it is PBEM, all I have to go on were the messages. Which stated that the Brits had successfully withdrawn from battle! It wasn't a battle, it was a siege! My question: is it always that easy to escape from a siege?

There is anyway 2 things modified on that for 1.07 (due this week end normally):

a) if your opponent sortie from a besieged structure, he will be put automatically in offensive posture.
b) if he retreats, he will goes back to the structure.

This should fix your problem...

My army was in Aggressive posture as I wanted to assault before winter set in. Not sure if my opponent ordered a sortie that same turn.

yup, in fact that was not the problem. The problem, corrected in 1.07 is that an army on sortie would not retreat back in the structure.
Now if his army did not broke the siege, I would like the savegame, as an army in a structure should not retreat.

Actually, I just moved my army to the south (the destination area in under my control), wanting to leave the city before my ennemy assault. I clicked on "Green" passive status, thinking I could more easily avoid an interception of my troops.

I suppose we won't have to restart our campaign after installing the new 1.07 patch ?

Ahh, great, the AI's ability to apparently always slip through my lines after loosing a sortie fight has been bugging me to no end. It made besieging a large enemy force in a non-strategic/objective town kind of pointless, IMHO...

Though, I admit, this annoncement makes waiting for the release of 1.07 a even more painful than it already was... :innocent:

The game in question is a PBEM game (against CristoFire-Ice). And he is "hosting", so is more likely to be able to provide complete save files. Recapping: he was under siege and tried to move away with PASSIVE posture. At the same time, I order an assault, that is changed my posture from OFFENSIVE to AGGRESSIVE. The game reported a "Battle" in which he successfully "withdrew". And away he went without any losses. Should be easy to reproduce?!? Maybe it was resolved as a sortie batttle???
