Regions and unit positioning.

Sun Jul 15, 2007 11:33 pm

In most regions, I can position various units in separate areas of a specific region and they will "stick" there. I can have 4 or 5 different formations spread out within a specific region and they will stay there.

Yet other regions units will not stick. Montreal is a perfect example but there are many regions not as small as Montreal. Within one or two seconds after moving one unit to another part of a region, the units will fly back to the center of the region with all other units. I am unable to make them stick to a part of the region so that I can manipulate all units in whatever way necessary. It can make separating units and combining units very tricky.

Is there anyway to correct regions such that units will "stick" when moved to specific part of a region? In most regions, that is exactly what happens.

Is there something I can do to change that "non-sticking" behavior of some regions?

The units can be centered because of 2 things:

a) this is specified in the region file, to un clutter the display. Take a look at boa\gamedata\regions\92 mont royal.rgn, this is Quebec (or Kebec as it was spelled at this time). You will see

FixedSprite = 1

change that to 0

b) if the enemy is there, each faction is placed in a single spot. you can't do anything about that.

Note also that you can handle merging and transfers with the tabs, this is how I do things and I never have to manipulate stacks on map with that. I believe this is less error prone.

Garrisoning Helps

Mon Jul 16, 2007 2:38 pm

Jagger,
I've found sprite positioning to be problematic as well. I've found that putting formations into garrison in a town and then moving units out keeps the region clutter down as then the moving units stay out of sight. Then you can just pop the big formation out of garrison to do whatever. I also find that taking a formation out of garrison, moving some other unit to it, and then popping it back down into garrison is quite effective at getting units into garrison and with the garrison already there. It's a matter of timing how you make your moves but you can get around the clutter by popping units in and out of garrison.

Thanks all! I will change a few regions and see if it makes things easier. If not, I will just use the tabs.
