AI behaivior and is it modable?

Sun May 27, 2007 7:37 am

The reason I'm asking is I continue to see the AI move around large stacks in Winter. To me that is killing the AI's force pool more than restrictive supply points . I have been going over the AILog in the Log folder, but haven't seen it do a check for weather. (BTW if you want to know how hard it is to code for an AI, have a look at your latest AI log after you finish a game. Gives one a whole new respect for coders.) :gardavou:

Is weather taken into acount, especially winter?

Testing 1.12 with city and village supply values of 2 and 3 respectively. Forts, Depots, and Harbors unchanged (5, 10, 1)
AI does seem better able to move and surprise me, but winter movement is killing it's armies.
1755 F&I AI is British.

yes weather is taken into account, but is integrated in the check for supply autonomy, reasoning being that if you have an autonomy significantly above 2 turns, then it means you have supply wagons and can move in winter thanks to the supply wagon shielding rule. It used to works right at a time, perhaps there is a bug now, if you have the proof, send it to me (a stack outside, in winter, without wagons).

The AI parameters can be tweaked, but you can't add new behaviors if they are not coded, this would ask also that I put in an external file all these parameters. Definitively doable, but a major work as I would need to comment each parameter heavily so that you know where you head. For now I prefer to get such report and try to fix it on my side, as I'm the one which know how each behavior can influence the others.

Explanation is enough..the units I see the AI move in Winter are large formations with one or more supply wagons...and seeing how much the AI actually does...I'm not going to try and even touch it.

yup, but if a stack melt away, this is abnormal, unless there is a bug :) so don't hesitate to watch out for this effect, this would be a major issue, and fixing it would do much good for the AI in contrary.

In that case, playing a modded 1.12a (Depots only give 12 supply, all other structures at 1.12a norms) I did have an AI British-Hessian force come down from Canada after taking Ticonderoga in the late fall and continue on south. Winter and my Continentals chasing them down effectively erased any northern threat to New York/ New England.
PS. I have modded a few Continental Generals .mdl files to give the Rebels a few more Major Generals in the beginning; Putnam, Warren, Schulyer, and Sullivan, which will explain any weird force/command structures you might see.
Game has progressed about six months since.
