Movement rates?

Wed Dec 20, 2006 10:59 pm

Goodaye,

I've downloaded the demo (new one) and I've a couple of questions.

Does the game model different movement rates? I see that each unit type has a movement rating such as 'light infantry' or 'wheeled'. I'm assuming that each of these have a specified movement rate in different terrains. Eg. Light infantry would move through the countryside faster than wheeled. I also understand that certain terrain prohibits movement of certain units.

I can't find this info anywhere (manual, forums etc) and I wonder if somebody could enlighten me as I'd like to know , for instance, if moving an army around with supply wagon / artillery is going to be slower than without. Also if I send cavalry off in pursuit how much faster will they be? Is there a list of base unit movement rates vs. terrain and weather that I have missed?

My other question was related to the limited scenario you can play in the demo. Surrounding boston are Ward's ragtag militia army. There are various leaders and units in the army. There is, however, a combined unit/leader with the 'marblehead rgt' that appears to have John Glover embedded as a commander. It only has one company element, not four. How does this work? Is the 'marblehead rgt' a unit or a commander? Can it be brought up to full strength and can you detach Glover so he can lead other rgts?

Thanks for your help and a big compliment to the developers for the 'look' of the game. Excellent.

Cheers,

Units have differing movement rates and terrain does affect these. Not much difference between Grenadier and Regular Infantry, but Indians and Rangers can really cover alot of ground. Artillery is extremely slow, especially in Forrest. Look on the unit cards to see the movement rate for each unit.

There are several Regiments that have an embedded Leader in the unit. These are like any regular unit, but the Leader that is in the unit, can also use his command ability to lead other units. You can build up the Marblehead Regiment with extra replacements in order to bring it up to full strength.

Goodaye,

Thanks for the info. I checked the unit cards and I assume you are referring to the 'movt ratio' which I figure is the variation from the base overall movement rate (at 100%) for everyone on the map.

On the other hand cavalry units (dragoons etc) have a 110% ratio as do many other foot units. Rangers have 120% ratio. Were horses that slow? Perhaps I haven't got it right after all...

the speed of a unit is a combination of the type of movement, movement ratio and the terrain the unit is in. A movement ratio of 100% just means that the unit move at an average speed, for the given movement type, but it is still better to have a cavalry moving at 100% speed compared to a heavy foot at 110%.

Except in mountain, etc. The matrix is quite buffy in fact, with perhaps 250 numbers for each terrain. We published it as this is needed for modding, so you should be able to get it in the modding forum. If not, tell us.

Goodaye,

O.K, makes sense. There is a lot more depth to the game than it first appears.

I had a look in your mod forum (and downloaded all the zips) but couldn't find the movement rates. If it's possible at some stage could you post them there.

I liked the demo, the AAR's and particularly your positive interaction with the (very polite) forum community. Santa will be bringing me a copy of BoA.
