Re: New to the game, looking for general tips

I too came to PON after playing a lot of Victoria 2. I would say the differences are profound. Victoria 2 is kind of a fantasy venture into a possible past. PON is an historical simulation of that past. PON takes a lot of learning of economics and is very solidly grounded in history. Do make sure yo...

Re: Soviet - Polish War

Durk, ERISS thank you for such detailed explanations! As I understand Poles in Grand Campaign controls by AI (as Green faction), not by human player. But in a single scenario they could control by Human, do they? In pbem play, that is, a three player game; the Eastern Whites (Siberians) control the...

Re: Soviet - Polish War

The Soviet Polish War does occur in the Grand Campaign. There are some variable factors as to when the Polish forces become active. I am not fully certain of the parameters for the Gold version of RUS, but in the older game: Low NM of the Southern Whites was a major factor. When they enter, they are...

Re: Morale Reduced System Making It Almost Impossible to Win as Sweden?

Well, as you probably already know, since you know how tough it is to get a glorious victory in any AGEOD game; the victory conditions are a tradeoff between game balancing and tallying up victories. In pbem, game balancing is a godsend to the weaker faction player. In solo play against the computer...

How to play 1850 if Austria's neighbor

Just a note to all. Many of you know this, I did not and several fellow players did not, if you are playing as Prussia, Sardinia/Piedmont, the Ottoman, France and even Russia - Austria is a beast. Do not make an alliance with her. She is so strong in the opening all other nations need to keep her co...

Re: Command Ratings

Really, experience raises the strategic ratings. I did not know. I wonder how many victories of what magnitude a 3 rated leader would need to get to be a 4, let alone a 5? Very nice to know.

Re: Combining generals with units

You analysis actually explains what is at issue very well. If the force/army is small, combine Sulla with a legion. But a larger force using Sulla as the army commander makes sense. I do not remember if this is correct, but I think there is a great chance for a leader to be killed in battle is attac...

Hmm, so much to learn about the history of gaming. I do hope some fellow with better knowledge than I possess writes a history, brief or conclusive of the transition of board wargaming to computer gaming.

The Diplomacy game was one of my earliest transitions.

I thorough agree with Gray Fox and Searry, my mentor, E. B. Long not only helped write Bruce Catton's volumes on the Army of the Potomac and his Civil War Trilogy, but also the volume, Why the South Won the Civil War is an exemplarily example of a neutral scholar on this war.

Re: Command Ratings

I do love this post and will be interested in what others say. But here is my take - I buy games to discover the game designer's notions of factors influencing the war. This applies to leader ratings also. When I wish to experiment with the designers ideas, I use the game options for variable rating...

Units in the convoy box allow you to bring in resources as the Republic. I think you might need some transports and maybe destroyers as you are getting resources, not blocking them.

Once trained, militia are regulars in all aspects.

I love your titling of forum topics. You have pretty much named it.
I suggest, taking troops to Majorca, especially a good leader. Blockade a port you are attempting to siege. Sneaking units to regions the Nationalist forgot to take.

You are very correct on this account of the difference. As the Nationalist start with trained me, until the Republic can train men, early loss ratios are very bad. Find training leaders and make sure the Republican forces are in command control. This helps a bit.
