Union 3* and Army Creation

The Union is blessed with a number of politically connected 3* slugs; passing these guys over for Army command incurs penalties and other problems. Just like RL. One possible workaround is to create Army commands for some, but ones that become essentially rear-area commands. For example, creating an...

Thanks! Works now.

There should be a sticky or corrected version of the manual on this one...that would help. In fact, at some point an updated manual would be helpful.

Re-Visiting this thread, because I can't get a PBEM launched. I started the game normally, as Union, didn't issue any orders. I saved, exited, and re-named the save, all within the game Exiting the game, went to SAVE file, and did NOT see any TRN files to send to opponent. My ORD in there, and HST f...

I hate to keep replying Ol Choctaw, and I understand your point. But if there was that much Southern sympathy, why didn't they enlist in the Confederate army? The Union army enlisted alot more Missourians than the Rebs did. I'm not disputing the heavy Southern support, particularly in Southern MO (w...

I want to run it more, but this bears watching, IMO. For fun, I opened a game in 1863 I had against AI until I dropped it. Union NM=149, and Reb NM= 58. The CSA was receiving about 70% of the per-turn conscripts the Union was. Seems a little high. It's true the Union gets more cash that can be conve...

You do know that the working class was not enfranchised to vote in that election? Jews and Catholics were not in the mix. It was primarily Protestant, propertied white men. Southern Volunteers and Conscription

I've played the early game a couple times head to head to learn the engine. I've found that it's not easy to hold D.C. against the Rebs. It takes an all-out effort to build a large enough army to secure it. Has anyone found the same thing? The issue to me is that the Confederates are able to build f...

I get the point on 1860 election; St. Louis county though voted for Lincoln. In fact, it was the only county in a slave state outside W. Va that did so. Douglas, another Unionist candidate, finished a close 2nd. The secessionist candidate Breckinridge got less than 10%. Over half the votes that Linc...

Couple Historical Quibbles

Great game, but just in the initial playing, I had a couple questions on historical quibbles. First, loyalty in St. Louis is 95% REB. Historically, St. Louis was solidly Unionist. Yes, significant Reb minority, but definitely a Union majority. I think 70% Union would be more accurate, but easily mor...

There is no limit to the amount of artillery you can put in a division, other than divisions are limited to 18 elements. I don't think there is an inherent benefit to having Artillery independently in a Corps, and not attached to a division. It's only about the command points, and an independent uni...

Thanks 'Ol Choctaw....you sort of confirmed my thinking that advancing overland from Fayetteville is a waste of time as the Union. Infantry Builds: What is the ideal mix of brigade types?

There are alot of options for both sides on building Brigades. What are the best choices? Money, Conscripts, etc, are all limited, so it's important to focus builds only on units that you need, or more specifically units that contain the elements you need. For example, alot of brigade choices includ...

I am not 100% sure, but supply pathing should follow the same logic as troop movement. Each combat ship brings 23% chance that a movement across river is blocked. 4 ships bring 90% chance of movement blockage (that is maximum blockade percentage). So there is always a chance unit will pass through ...

River Wars! Naval War on the Rivers

Ok, I have some questions around Naval Wars on rivers. First, can supplies and/or troops cross a river with an enemy ship in it? Does it matter how many are in there? Historically the Rebs abandoned large areas because the navigable rivers in their rear were uncovered, like in Tennessee, so it must ...

Storming the Ramparts: What's the best way to take a pre-war fort as Union?

Gents: What is the best way, playing Union, to take a pre-war fort? I am thinking fortifications like Ft. St. Phillip or Ft. Question on Force Production

I have a question on the best build selection for units. Militia eventually trains up to Conscript, or Regular infantry level, correct? How are you going to take the forts in the Florida Keys without Transports? You don't have enough lift capacity unless you build alot of brigs, and that is very risky to send troops to sea with Union control of the waves. Ft Pickens is takeable. It can be a thorn, as Union troops can walk over into ...

Problem with Renaming Games

Every time I attempt to rename the game at start, for example changing "1813 Campaign" to "PBEM-Brad-v-Bob", the game crashes. This is true on every scenario. I am patched through 1.02c. The game functions fine if I do not rename the saves. Is this a common problem?

I have played some PBEM on ACW (in fact, you can read a couple AAR's if you like), but never NCP. Haven't played much AI either, but ready to try a PBEM.

I'll play either side, maybe 1807, 1809, 1812, 1813 campaigns interest me most.

I think the advice here is good against the AI. You can always draw supply up the Atchifalaya (past Berwick, W. Baton Rouge), and back down. Taking the city first is wise, then the forts. The AI will leave you alone. I would not recommend that, however, against the Living. A human could easily block...

Transports should always be your first choice to build a supply depot. Look at the cost: One unit at 10-2-5 or whatever it is exactly, vs. 2 units at 25-20-12 or whatever wagons are (I forget). You save 38 conscripts by using a transport instead of 2 wagons, that is an entire Brigade! Very huge! Nev...

Missing State Capitols

I just realized, since I am slow on the uptake, that there are two state capitols that are not represented in the game. Probably not important, though you would think it would mean at least a level 1 city, or a mention. But Frankfort or Milledgeville aren't there.
