O.k. so if my raiders are doing about 40-80 damage to money/war supply against the union a turn, is that going to put a dent in the union economy?

Wow, thats alot. How many ships did you have to build in order to get to that level?

40 isnt, 80 i am not sure
money usually isnt a problem for the union (human player), they are swimming in it.
and if they see a problem rising they simply can build brigs/transports to haul in more money.

Its the fall of 1862 and my merchant raiders are doing around 240 damage $$ and WS now. I have a fairly huge fleet as manpower seems to be my problem as the CSA. Invested in Fleets and artillery. How much damage do I need to do to ruin the northern economy?

I honestly do not believe that it is possible to damage the Northern economy with the CSA navy. The only way would be physical occupation of the Northern cities, especially the industrial ones.

As the Union, I've never gotten as much as 240 Money & War Supply per turn from the transports, even adding both together. I think the most I got was around 90.

I always build all of my available transports by 1862, & their income generated is a moderate percentage of the total per turn capital.
They bring mostly money from the Fall of 1861 on, it seems. War supply is mostly generated via industry & the investment therein.

A lack of CSA ground troops is a great blessing for the North.
If you concentrate on ships/strategic concerns, they will occupy most of your cities in fairly short order.

Well several losses for the Union would force it to print money and issue higher bonds. It creates a vicious circle which even the Union's economy can't sustain in the long run.

BTW is it better to collect raiders in fleets for greater effect or use them singly or in penny packets? And are steam frigates good raiders or should I go for sailing frigates and brigs instead?

?

it creates nothing, really.
inflation is no factor in the game, your only concern would be loosing NM.
For example i never use "print paper money" as CSA , it unbalances things too much.

In my current game, I have maybe 6 in the shipping box. They give me about 20 money and no ws. I'm making 200+ money and 128 WS. I have about 1300WS in the bank.

I kinda think the Confeds are better off with BRs
