Firstly, welcome to the Ageod Forums, jnels80!

Regarding your concerns, of those generals that you have mentioned, I just would elect Hooker to command a stack. Banks is a medi  cre general but he has a very useful ability (Recruiting Officer). He can muster new conscripts on a regular basis in cities of level 5+. He must be in the city to do so. So you can use him for this purpose. Burnside has that ability too, so I use them to do the same. ;)

Have fun here and enjoy playing!! :hat:

There are those who know much more about this than I do, but I will give it a go.

Buying reinforcements to form divisions, I like to have a good mix of artillery and cavalry to go with all of the infantry so I don’t always build divisions from just one state.

PA has some fine brigades with sharp shooters in them and I like at least one unit of those in a division. NJ has only a few units and all lack cavalry in their brigades but MD has some of those. Don’t forget that DE also has a few infantry and artillery units and MD can provide a few cavalry squadrons.

NY has a lot of units but it can be a long way to go and I usually build the big brigades and some artillery up there for amphibious operations, as you usually have fleets there as well.

As you said, you know that divisions can be 17 units and the leader so I try to max them out as best I can. Before you have corps I try to have two leaders with each division to avoid command penalties.

Two stars generals can build corps and three stars can build corps or armies.

As soon as Banks shows up I send him off to NY City to provide a bonus in conscripts and when Burnsides shows up I send him to Washington for the same reason. Hooker gets a division and I try to promote him ASAP.

Those units built in MA are only two days farther away than NY City and can make it to Manassas in one turn by rail which is better than those units built in up state NY. Also about one third of PA units are built in the west and end up in KY as often as not.

I took too long writing that post LOL.

I usually put a screen of units from Grafton to Washington to stop raiders and slowly work my way south.

Johnston is low powered to start with so he will go south if you get a stack of 600 or better into Harpers Ferry.

I build that anphib force in NY and send it down to Ft. Monroe or Norfolk and squeeze them out of Fredericksburg.

From there you just reinforce who needs it most keeping your free generals back at Washington or Alexandria to meet the troops as they come south.

Until you can form divisions, they can go into monster stacks that you attempt to swat the enemy with (they enemy is doing the same thing). On the union side, you will want 2 or 3 stacks in the east (the army + 1 or 2). You will want them in/around Manassas/Alexandria/Harper's Ferry (don't forget to put some in Washington for defense) depending on how events transpire in the game. In June you may want to start raising forces for a peninsula campaign (or maybe not).

You get 2 main troops builds in the beginning of the game (sometime before June, and then June when the options reset). Make the most of those, as this is when you get the bulk of your forces.

Don't forget to build some troops in the west as well.

All good advice. I'm pretty new at this too. I suggest you read some of the AARs. It'll give you some good ideas. Try the Yellowhammer vs Sedgwick one if you're playing the Yankees!
