Assaulting Memphis

I just wanted to check and make sure there isn't anything unique about the Memphis area. I have had Grant with an army sitting on it for four turns lagged for Assault but he does nothing. There aren't any special restrictions on the city are there?

Well, as the king of rock'n'roll (Elvis "the pelvis", you know) hometown there is a special rule for Menphis: it can be assaulted ever
(just joking!:wacko
There isn't any special rule.
But... Is Grant at the head of and Army stack with other corps stacks on the same region??
If the answer is yes, you have to give the assault order to one or more of the cops stacks and the Army stack will support the assault.
But unless the army stack is the only one on the region it will not take offensive postures (Offensive/assault) by himself, only in support of his coprs.
Consider it the "army reserve".
If the answer is no, post as screen shot and the save game so we can check whats the problem.
Cheers!

I often attack with the army stack only and i did not have any problem with offensive posture.

Were there other corps stacks in the same region?

No, only army stack. I did it recently in a pbem with DarthMath, an attack with Rosecrans as army commander with 3 divisions under command, no problem to report.
I am surprised that army stack could not be used alone, i do not understand why.

If you have only an army stack in the region, you can attack with it.
If you have an army stack together with one or more corp stacks in the same region, the army stack cannot attack on its on. It must attack with one of more of the corps stacks.

Grant is with his Army stack with two divisions attached but there are no other Corps in the region. There is one other independent group.
He has now been in the Memphis region for five turns all set on Assault without executing an assualt. He has had initiative every turn. He has managed to breach the defenses but the one militia in Memphis continues to hold off has 10,000 man force.
I will use an indepent force to take the city if I have one in range but this almost sounds like a bug. Like his force doesn't know it is suppose to try to attack.

In order to check out what is happening, can you upload your savegame here?

I remember this happening to someone outside Alexandria, VA as well as Memphis, TN. The culprit there was a lone leader of the opponents mucking things up... I'll look for the thread...

Perhaps it's not the same issue though, as Pocus said this was squared away with 1.13. Something similar perhaps?

You should also check into the size of the defending force. I've had similar situation where my attacking force set on all out offensive stance but wouldn't do a thing because it was outnumbered.

I believe the game is set up where forces will not make any sort of less than average (to be nice)

attack. Did I state that clearly?

I finally took Memphis after its fortifications were breached and I split Grant's force into his HQ, Corps and an independent force and they all attacked. I kill all 300 of its militia defenders and took the city. Must have been Spartans.
