Field Hospital Question

I do not understand the function of the Field Hospital. Does it help your units repair after battle? Also, how many of them should I get? Should I group them with my corps, or keep them with the army HQ?

Hospitals help only the stack they're in, and you need only one in a stack for it to have effect. IIRC, they help units to recover cohesion faster

Yes, they help units buid cohesion faster after a battle or a long march.
Usually it's smart to have at least one hospital unit with each major army you have in the field. (Since they will do a lion's share of the major "cohesion busting" action).
Ideally, you want to have a hospital unit for every Corps you have fielded..however the cost is pretty hard to bear when you could be spending the money and war supply on troops instead.

I use the field hospitals as well in my fighting corps. But Soundoff hasn't been using his in our game and if you look closely at his AAR against Banks6060 he isn't using them there either! So I guess not everyone uses them.

Big Ideas, I don't think it's very nice to present soundoff's dispositions direclty to the face of his opponent, even if it is only part of those dispositions...

If you are playing CSA I would recommend sticking them with powerful Corps, it does have medium to long term benefits to do so? As CSA you dont want to be slothful about recovering cohesion - especially not if your in a PvP against a Fed who knows what he is doing?

. I must admit it is rather useful information.

I didn't think I was giving anything away. I'm sure all players check your opponent's stacks- particularly corps and armies- to see what make up they have. Sure you look at their strengths and number of divisions- but you also pay attention to how many artillery elements are outside the divisions, number of supply wagons, engineers, if there is a large number of promotable leaders in the corps, and FIELD HOSPITALS, signal units, balloon units, marines. You should be looking at these things all the time, particularly against new opponents, but you should be checking even during the offensives or after the production ledgers have reset.
I apologize if I given away any useful information- that was not my intention of course- I was sure you already would have known this from your own observations. I guess everyone has a different style.

@BI--I'm sorry if I was piling it on there, but I was only speaking in jest. You're absolutely right about the intel on stacks. I'd already noticed a lack of both hospitals and signal corps in Soundoff's stacks. It was a good observation worth noting.
