Union Newbie Questions

Have read the guies, wiki, everything but still need some guidance as the breadth of the game can be intimidating (And I have played Europa for 25 years!!!!)
As the Union player, what should I focus on for reinforcements:
* Artillery?
* Cavalry?
How should I deploy my naval forces - apart from the obvious blockading?
In general what happenings/events should I be conscsios of in order to win.
