Re-entrenching?

Hi There,

First: WONDERFUL game. It's become an embarrassingly big part of my life lately, as I've never experienced an ACW simulation that forced you to make strategic decisions with truly historical implications. Great work!

My question/issue is this: I have a line of solid entrenchments south of Washington (playing CSA) that are at about "8" depth. I feinted out of them with a corps in a recent turn (never leaving the region, but I started to move towards DC), then turned back to resume my position and realized that my entrenchments were gone.

I feel that sometimes that's the right approach, especially if there are enemy units in your front. But when there aren't any enemy in the region, it might be appropriate to "remember" those very deep entrenchments and allow units to reenter them if they've only been away a few turns.

Just my 2 cents. Thanks again for a great game.

Try moving a small unit (militia is best for it) into a big stack that sits in 8 level entrenchment. Now the unit also has 8-level entrechement. Now take your original stack and move it into another region, leaving that new unit in place and prefferably locking the new unit to avoid merging or moving it accidentaly. When you get back to the region with your big stack you will be able to join your lonely unit and voila - stack should have now level 8 entrenchemnt again!

Just try to have militia or other small units or any other unit available to join big, entrenched stack before moving so they can "conserve" the entrechments. Of course the will retreat if a big enough enemy stack hops into tha region. If that happens the entrenchemnt will be gone.

PS. I am not sure if a single support units (medics, engineer etc.) can preserve your entrenchments in the same way.

PS. Feel free to correct me, I run 1.05a AACW.

If the trenchholding unit doesn't include artillery, do you lose the entrenchments above level 4?

one day, the entrenchments values, and quantity (was if for a single troop or a corps) will be stored as a separate variable in each region. one day (for VGN, I'm certain)
