Tried to install the game I just received for my birthday.
It gets to the end of the install process and just sits there.
Small box doesn't do anything just says finishing installation but
it never does. Verified it's not doing anything.
Tried starting the game figuring it did install and the auto-install messed up.
Black screen with a bar as if files are loading. Then the bar get 1/2 way across screen and nothing. Repeated same results.
Tried re-installing with above results two times.
Any suggestions or should I just send it back and get our money back?

Maybe you try this:
Go to Start->Programs->AGEOD's American Civil War and start the configuration tool, insert the serial there. Then start the game again.

configuration tool won't open.
I can't tell if the game even completely installed.
Not very impressed with this software.

This is probably not a problem of the software, but an interaction between the game installation and the anti-virus-software, I guess.
Maybe you try installing with the antivirus-software deactivated?

I don't believe anit-virus software can affect installing files from a cd.
It doesn't with any other software installation.
Guess I'll just stop payment to amazon and let them figure out what they
want to do with this software and package.

The installation is installing FROM the CD TO your hard drive. Of course the Anti-Virus could be causing a problem. That's a key point of Anti-Virus...looking at every file copied to your hard drive. It will also look at every file you try to run, whether from a CD or hard drive.
If I were you, I'd stick with it. You'll miss out on one of the best games ever created if you cancel your order.
Are you running VISTA? If so, have you tried running the installation as an administrator?

Normally, during the installation process the configuration tool is started to allow for the insertion of the serial. This process is blocked by some anti-virus programs. Therefore the installation process get stuck and does not finish.
If you then start the game without having typed in the serial, the game too tries to start the configuration tool, which is eventually again blocked by the anti-virus. Therefore your problems, I guess.

I hope you don't have plans to buy from amazon in the future if you do this...

Sorry for this inconvenience KYA.
Often the culprits are an anti-virus (Norton most notably), anti-spyware (spybots search and destroy) or Vista's UAC.
If you want to be sure, go offline and try installing the game elsewhere but on C:\program files, with your Anti virus and antispyware unloaded. Then reboot if the install succeed before doing anything.
The installer used can be blocked sometime, perhaps once every 1000 customers. There is nothing much we can do on our side but provide you with advices, back luck happen (and I'm polite

).

Well, it works for thousand players around the world. I play the game it on three computers with completely different configurations (one is a 3 years old laptop) and it works pretty well so maybe you should take into consideration something is going wrong on your pc.

Did what you showed above with following results:
Game installed
Put it as mentioned in a directory under c: drive and not in program files dir.
Now a pop-up appears asking for the serial number.
If this is the serial number( inside cd case on a label called PC AM Civil War Reg Code)
Six sets of numbers/letters separated by hyphens.
Then it says "your serial number has been saved".
Then a pop-up with the following appears:
"Your serial number does not have the expected length. Enter you serial number exactly as it is written on your validation card, hyphens included".
Then an "OKAY" button.
What am I missing? No card came with game just the label adhered to the inside of the cd case, with what I assume is the serial number.
Closer but still no go.
Thanks for those trying to help.
