His capture of Plymouth NC earned him a promotion to major -general. He led a division under Beauregard in the defense of Petersburg and the counterattack driving Butler back to Bermuda Hundred. Fought in the Fort Fisher campaign and ended the war under Johnston in North Carolina.

Hoke did a lot with a little; he nearly ended the Federal hold on coastal North Carolina even after the loss of the CSS Albemarle---only being recalled to deal with Butler's attempt which Hoke played a role in trapping him on Bermuda Hundred. Hoke also held his ground at Cold Harbor.

In 1865, Hoke ran afowl of his new department commander, Braxton Bragg, who restrained Hoke at Fort Fisher, operations around Wilmington, Kinston, and worse at Bentonville, stopping Hoke from joining Hill's attack on the exposed flank of Morgan's 14th Corps division and attacking Morgan's entrenchments instead.

There is a story that Lee told Davis that he intended Hoke to be his successor. The only source is Hoke himself, and I think it likely that Lee wanted to compliment a valued subordinate in front of President Davis without necessarily being serious. Still, Lee thought much of Hoke...
