Earned the nickname "Slow Come" at Gettysburg for his failure to support Howard's corps on the first day. His slowness seems to be a result of caution. He had no problem moving quickly in Sherman's march to the sea. Once committed to battle he was a tough fighter. In the entire war his command never lost a stand of colors or a gun.
