This is an interesting one....

Porter was really solid during the Seven Days Battles....He held off a superior force for most of the day at Gaines' Mill. He also helped to stop Lee cold at Malvern Hill.
At 2nd Bull Run Porter refused an order to attack with his V Corps that would have left the Federal flank completely uncovered...He knew Longstreet was in the area, and an attack where Pope ordered it would have been a REALLY bad idea. However, Pope still had him court-martialed for not obeying the order.
At Antietam, Porter helped convince McClellan to not throw the V Corps into the center of the Confederate lines. At this point in the battle, one more strong push in the center probably would have finished the job....as it turned out, the Army of Northern Virginia lived to fight another day.

I'd be interested to hear what other people think about his ratings. Clearly, he was tough on the defensive. On the other hand, on the offensive one could at best describe him as prudent, at worst say he was cautious.

My recommendation:

307 USA Fitzjohn Porter ldr_USA_FJPorter NULL NULL NULL NULL 3 5 1 18 General 1 NULL 3 1 3

Agree that he make the best defense he could at Gaines Mill.

Fitz John-Porter was a decent general, who ran afoul of military politics. He was best friends with McClellan and had the same slow feet (we're the last force between the Confederates and Richmond) thinking, but he could lead and fight. His defiance of orders at Second Manassas saved Pope's army from destruction likely. He did well in the Penisula campaign.

I rate at 4-2-3.
